A&M runners take second at Iowa Open: IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Texas A&M cross country teams earned second-place finishes to open the season in a three-team meet hosted by the University of Iowa.

A&M's men had 43 points to Iowa, which won with 18. Wichita State had 79 points.

On the women's side, Iowa won with 24 points followed by A&M (56) and Wichita State (61).

Kevin Ondrasek led the Aggie men by placing fourth in the 33-man field, covering the 6,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 55.38 seconds. Mitch Bible was sixth (19:01.79) and Kevin Burnett was eighth (19:24.99). Other A&M finishers were: 15th, Graham Northcutt,19:39.36; 16th, James Hodges, 19:41.61; 19th, Wes Caceres, 20:06.20; 20th, Chad Brown, 20:15.14; 21st, Will Barry, 20:18.50; 23rd, Josh Litos, 20:25.67; 27th, Dusty Langwell, 20:34.48 and 30th, Mitch Blakely, 21:01.00.

For the A&M women, Christina Munoz, an NCAA qualifier last season, was third among 34 runners with a time of 10:35.52 over 3,000 meters. Other A&M finishers were: 10th, Elizabeth Slaughter, 11:00.00; 14th, Alie Cornell, 11:13.07; 21st, Kasey McNorton, 11:25.97; 23rd, Leigh Berger, 11:28.41; 25th, Brooke Upshaw, 11:35.20; 27th, Sarah Balfour, 11:37.90; 29th, Kirsten Brown, 11:41.99; 31st, Emilie Fischer, 11:54.19.

GOLF

Pavan wins match at St. Andrews Trophy: ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Texas A&M junior Andrea Pavan won his singles match Friday but fell in foursomes play on the opening day of the St. Andrews Trophy at Kingsbarn Golf Club.

Great Britain and Ireland leads Pavan's Continental Europe team 7.5-4.5 going into the final day of competition. Pavan beat England's Chris Paisley 3 and 2 in singles. With teammate Jorge Campillo, Pavan dropped 1 up decision to England's Sam Hutsby and Dale Whitnell in foursomes. Campillo, who is from Spain, is the world's top-ranked amateur.

The teams will square off with another round of singles matches on Saturday morning before closing out the competition with foursomes play in the afternoon.
