Kansas State's Viviana Yrureta defeated Nebraska's Imke Reimers 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (10) to give the 10th-seeded Wildcats a 4-3 victory in opening-round women's action at the Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Thursday.

KSU, which won the doubles point, needed a 1-6, 7-5 (4), 6-4 victory from freshman Vanessa Cottin over Stephanie Evans at No. 4 singles to even the match at 3.

That set up senior Yrureta to close out the dual match at No. 1 singles. Seventh-seeded Nebraska (16-7) had defeated KSU 5-1 in the regular-season finale last week with Yrureta and Cottin losing in straight sets.

KSU (8-13) advances to play No. 2 Texas (16-5) at 3 p.m. Friday in the women's quarterfinals.

Texas Tech, Kansas and Oklahoma State were the other first-round winners.

No. 9 Tech defeated No. 8 Oklahoma 4-1. Tech (12-11) will play No. 1 Baylor (25-2) at 9 a.m. Friday.

No. 5 KU defeated No. 12 Iowa State 4-0. KU (10-12) will play No. 4 Colorado (11-10) at noon Friday.

No. 6 OSU defeated No. 11 Missouri 4-1. OSU (12-9) will play No. 3 Texas A&M (15-7) at 6 p.m. Friday.

The men will swing into action Friday with the quarterfinals.

No. 2 Baylor will play No. 7 Nebraska at 9 a.m.; No. 3 Oklahoma State will play No. 6 Oklahoma at noon; and No. 4 Texas Tech will play No. 5 A&M at 3 p.m. Top-seeded Texas (19-4) received a first-round bye and will play the A&M-Tech winner at noon Saturday.

Former A&M men's tennis coach David Kent will be honored between the Aggie matches Friday. At approximately 5 p.m. a plaque will be unveiled at the remodeled courtyard named after him.
