Lapierre wins Athens Grand Prix on last jump: Athens, Greece -- Competing in the stadium that hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics, former Texas A&M NCAA champion Fabrice Lapierre claimed another long jump victory on the European circuit with a come-from-behind effort in the sixth and final round of the Athens Grand Prix over the weekend.
Lapierre went into the final round in eighth place before hitting a mark of 27 feet, 0.5 inches to pass Greek jumper Louis Tsatoumas, who had led at 26-11.25.
With the victory comes 10 points in the season standings for the World Athletics Final. Lapierre reclaimed the lead in the long jump race with 70 points, leading Godfrey Mokoeno (62), Dwight Phillips (60) and Tsatoumas (50).
Bashir Ramzy, another former A&M athlete, placed fifth with a leap of 25-7.5.
In other action, former A&M NCAA champion Simone Facey was fifth in the 100 meters in 11.28 seconds. Fellow Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown won the race in 10.96.
Texas A&M volunteer assistant coach Aries Merrit finished fifth in the 110 hurdles in 13.48.
Over the weekend at the British Championships in Birmingham, England, former A&M runner Tyron Edgar finished third in the 100 in 10.28.

Two Aggies earn All-Academic honors: NEW ORLEANS -- Brittany Machacek and Sandy Wooten each received All-Academic honors from the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday.
Machacek and Wooten each competed in the 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay for the Aggies. Wooten also ran the 600 yards during the indoor season, winning the Big 12 title in that event.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team, the athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their event.
A record 531 athletes representing 146 Division I schools made the women's 2009 All-Academic team.
TENNIS
Krajicek, Hoover successful on summer circuit: Texas A&M All-American Austin Krajicek and fellow Aggie Colin Hoover have enjoyed a successful month of competition on the USTA Futures Pro Circuit and ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, respectively.
Krajicek, a junior competing as an amateur on the pro circuit, reached the singles quarterfinals of the UBS Men's Futures of Pittsburgh. He reached the finals of the doubles draw in Pittsburgh, teaming up with Rhyne Williams.
Hoover captured a pair of singles titles on the ITA Summer Circuit. He won tournaments held at McMurray University and Collin County Community College.
