Medrano breaks school record in 200 butterfly: COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Texas A&M freshman Rita Medrano broke the school record in the 200-yard butterfly at a last-chance meet held at the Mizzou Aquatic Center on Sunday afternoon.
Medrano, seeking to better her NCAA consideration time of 1 minute, 57.30 seconds in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, broke the record for the second straight day. Medrano recorded a time of 1:56.73, chopping more than a half-second off the mark she set a day earlier.
The Aggie women also improved upon their NCAA consideration time in the 200-yard medley relay. The group of Megan Latone, Alia Atkinson, Triin Aljand and Maria Sommer clocked a time of 1:38.32, improving on their time of 1:38.35 that earned them a second-place finish in the Big 12 Championships on Wednesday.
Alia Atkinson earned her first NCAA consideration time of the year in the 200-yard individual medley after hitting the wall in 1:59.44. Atkinson will now swim that race at the NCAA Championships in addition to both breastrokes.
Ella Doerge set a lifetime best of 49.80 in the 100-yard freestyle on Sunday.
Sally Ranzau and Tracey Renfrew each set lifetime bests in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.62 and 24.98, respectively, as did Casey Hurrell-Zitelman (25.17). Leslie Dlugopolski also set a personal best in the 100-yard butterfly (57.59).
The Aggies will learn on Friday how many swimmers qualified for the NCAA Championships. That meet is set for March 19-21 at A&M.
TENNIS
A&M men fall to Louisville: LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Marcus Lunt was the only bright spot for No. 13 Texas A&M in a 6-1 loss to No. 33 Louisville on Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Lunt won his second-set tiebreaker to get past Louisville's Robert Hall 6-3, 7-6 (6) at No. 5 singles to improve to 15-8 overall on the season and 5-2 in dual match play. Three remaining singles matches at the No. 2 through No. 4 lines would go down to the wire, but the Cardinals won the third set in each.
Louisville's Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated A&M's Conor Pollock and Austin Krajicek 8-6, ending the All-America duo's match streak at seven.
The Aggies (3-4) dropped their second-straight road indoor dual match.
The Aggies face No. 29 Boise State (7-5) on Friday in Idaho and No. 41 Washington (8-3) on Sunday in Seattle.
