A&M 11th in Director's Cup: Texas A&M jumped nine places to 11th with 951 points in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings which honor institutions that maintain broad-based sports for both men and women.
A&M this spring won national championships in men's golf, men's outdoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field. Those were each worth 100 points. A&M also picked up 25 points for a 33rd-place finish in softball. The only other sport included in the June 19 update was women's rowing, where A&M doesn't field a team.
A&M finished 12th last year with 1,031 points, both school-record efforts. The Aggies should be able to match the 12th place, but not the points with only baseball to be calculated.
A&M, which went 1-2 at the Fort Worth Regional, is expected to earn 25 more points, which is what teams received last year for tying for 33rd or 49th. That would give A&M 976 points, allowing them to pass Washington (963.75), which did not compete in the NCAA baseball tournament. However, Louisiana State (929) and Arizona State (918.75) each made the College World Series, putting them in position to pass the Aggies.
This is the Aggies third straight Top 20 finish (18th in 2006-07).
Stanford has 1,455 points and has wrapped up its 15th straight title. Michigan (1163.90), Southern Cal (1,137.75), North Carolina (1,131.25), Florida (1,108.75), California (1,072), Texas (1,015.50), Ohio State (990.80), Virginia (981) and Washington round out the Top 10.
SOCCER
Canada's Clavijo signs: Midfielder Catalina Clavijo of Canada has signed with the A&M soccer team.
Clavijo, who played for the U-15 Women's Canadian National team, Clavijo comes to Texas A&M from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada where she was named the club and city player of the year as a member of the South End United soccer club.
Clavijo also was selected to participate at the Regional Training Center and the National Training Center after representing Manitoba in the All-Star National Championship. Clavijo played for the Manitoba Provincial team and won a bronze medal at the Rocky Mountain Cup in 2003 and played in the 2006 Philadelphia College Showcase.
"Cat is a terrific young player who we think will fit very well into the technical style and rhythm of our program," A&M head coach G. Guerrieri said. "We're also excited about the smooth level of international sophistication she's going to inject into our team."
Clavijo is the eighth high school senior to sign with the Aggies, joining Katherine Bartley (College Station), Kimberly Castleberry (McKinney), Lyndsey Gnatzig (Humble), Chelsea Jones (Belton), Christina Navalta (Carrollton), Mary Schmidt (Orange, Calif.) and Nora Skelton (Austin).
