HOUSTON -- A television station is reporting that former Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie said he has checked into an alcohol-related rehabilitation program following his arrest on a drunken-driving charge last month.
Houston television station KRIV reported Wednesday night that Gillispie said he was taking responsibility "by going to spend some time with John Lucas in Houston. He's got the John Lucas Athletes After Care Program. He's going to deal with some alcohol issues for me."
Attorney William L. Patrick, who is representing Gillispie in his DUI case, said Wednesday he could not confirm an earlier report by WKYT-TV in Lexington that Gillispie had entered the program.
Patrick said Gillispie was considering entering a rehabilitation program in Houston following his arrest on a drunken-driving charge last month. Gillispie reportedly said he checked in last Thursday.
Gillispie was arrested on Aug. 27 following an early morning traffic stop about 30 minutes west of Lexington, Ky. He has pleaded not guilty. Patrick said a court date is still scheduled for Sept. 23, but Gillispie will not be required to appear.
The station reported Gillispie said he's "not very proud of what happened in Kentucky two weeks ago." He also said, "That's inexcusable at this stage of my life. It should have never happened."
Gillispie, who also coached at Texas A&M, was fired in March after going 40-27 in two seasons with the Wildcats.
