Tobi Oyedeji, a Bellaire High School student, died from injuries received after his senior prom, a friend who just left the hospital Oyedeji was taken to told The Eagle.
Word spread in online forums throughout the afternoon about the incident. Earlier in the day, Texas A&M basketball coach Mark Turgeon asked people to keep Oyedeji in their thoughts.
“Please pray for Tobi Oyedeji,” Turgeon posted on Twitter. “He was in a car accident last night and is battling some significant injuries. He needs our prayers.”
More details were not immediately available.
The 6-foot-9 senior standout averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks a game this season, when the team went 35-2.
Earlier this month, he traveled to Azusa, Calif., to play in the High School Academic All-American Game. His on- and off-court ability got him there: he kept his grade-point average above 3.0 throughout his stay at Bellaire and met other requirements.
In that game, he was named the American squad’s Player of the Game.
Sheldon McClellan, a junior at Bellaire, said Oyedeji was a strong leader on the court, and even more off.
“He taught me to keep my grades up ... and watch who I hang out with,” McClellan said. “He was always a winner.”
He was remembered as someone excited about coming to Texas A&M. On his Facebook page, his name is “Tobi AggieBound Oyedeji.”
