Eagle Staff Report
Texas A&M men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon has agreed in principle to a new contract with the school, athletics director Bill Byrne announced Monday.
Turgeon, who just completed his third season at A&M, has posted a 73-31 record. The Aggies were 24-10 this season, tying for second in the Big 12 standings and making the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight season.
No specifics on the deal were released. Turgeon has completed three years on an eight-year contract worth about $1.2 million a season.
“People that know me understand I am a straight-forward type of person,” Turgeon said. “Based upon conversations with Bill and the university administration, I feel comfortable in stating I will be the coach at Texas A&M. We have accomplished a lot, but we have a lot more that we want to accomplish here. Our players and recruits can see the commitment made to basketball and the future is very bright.”
Turgeon’s contract needs approval from the Texas A&M board of regents, whose next meeting is scheduled for May 27-28.
“Mark is a terrific basketball coach and an even better person,” Byrne said. “The Turgeons like Aggieland, and it is important to Aggies everywhere that we reward him for a tremendous season and also maintain Texas A&M’s commitment to a championship-caliber basketball program.”
