BASEBALL

Yankees sign Fossum: Former Texas A&M pitcher Casey Fossum signed a minor-league deal with the New York Yankees on Saturday, then was the starting pitcher in the team's Triple-A club that afternoon.

The 31-year-old left-hander pitched 3 2/3 innings in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 5-1 victory over Norfolk. Fossum allowed two hits, one run, striking out four and walking two.

The New York Mets designated Fossum for assignment Sunday after clearing waivers, but he elected for free agency.

Fossum opened the season with Triple-A Buffalo, making two starts. The Mets called him up on April 19. He didn't have a decision in three games, pitching four innings with a 2.25 earned run average.

Fossum has pitched in 237 major league games, 120 of them as a starter. He has a career record of 40-53 with a 5.45 ERA.

EQUESTRIAN

Team Honors Riders at Annual Banquet: Junior Caroline Gunn was given a most valuable rider award at the postseason banquet for the Texas A&M equestrian team Friday at the Zone Club at Kyle Field.

Gunn defended her individual national championship in horsemanship with a 6-0 record at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships to lead the Aggies to the western team title.

Other award winners were sophomore Tara Christiansen, reining MVP; senior Tegan Zealy, flat MVP; senior Kristi Waldal, fences MVP; redshirt freshman Elizabeth Solch, Aggie Heart; junior Lindsay Smith, Best Under Pressure for hunter seat; sophomore Randi Standley, Best Under Pressure for western; freshman Katie Lisabeth, western rookie of the year; freshman Maggie Earle, hunter seat rookie of the year; sophomore Morgan Lucas, most improved rider for fences; junior Leah Ward, most improved for the western team; junior Maggie Gratny and freshman Jackie O'Connell, Miss Aggie.

SOCCER

Two Aggies invited to national camp: Texas A&M freshman midfielder Beth West and signee Kim Castleberry were at the U-20 U.S. Women's National Team camp last week at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

West started 23 of 24 games for the Aggies last season. Forward Castleberry was named TopDrawerSoccer.com's No. 1 recruit for the class of 2009.

A&M junior goalkeeper Kristin Arnold and freshman defender Bri Young attended the U-23 national team camp last month. Young also played for the U-20 national tam camp in Spain earlier this year.

TRACK

Reid sets triple jump record: AUSTIN -- Texas A&M's Julian Reid broke a 14-year-old school record in the triple jump by winning the Texas Invitational on Saturday at 54 feet, 10 1/4 inches at Myers Stadium.

Kendrick Smith set the record in 1995 at 54-6 3/4.

Reid led a 1-2-3 Aggie sweep as Melvin Echard finished second (52-4 3/4) and Terry Dike third (49-0 3/4).

A&M also swept the top three spots in the long jump -- Keenan Hall (24-8 1/4), Tyron Stewart (24-5) and Zuheir Sharif (24-1).

The Aggies capped the meet with a pair of 4 x 400 relay victories. The women won in 3 minutes, 43.84 seconds, while the men ran 3:09.42.

For the women, Ashika Charan won the long jump (20-3 3/4) while Yasmine Regis was the top collegian in the triple jump (42-8 3/4).

A&M's Vashti Thomas was second in the long jump (19-11 1/2). A&M volunteer assistant Brenda Faluade won the triple jump (43-4 1/2). A&M's Angela Thomas placed as the third collegian (42-3 1/2).

The 4x100-meter relay team of Elizabeth Adeoti, Porscha Lucas, Allison George and Dominique Duncan won in 43.82 seconds.

Bryan Miller won his heat of the 400 (46.47). Windy season best marks came for Gerald Phiri in the 100 (10.15) and Chris Dykes in the 200 (20.43)0. Allison George ran a wind-aided 11.34, while MacLean OâDonnell claimed the men's 3000 meters (8:35.73).
