A&M's Beard advances to 400 final at USA Championships; Lee runner-up in 100: EUGENE, Ore. -- Texas A&M's Jessica Beard advanced to the final of the 400 meters at the USA Championships with a third-place effort in Friday's semifinal at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
A&M volunteer assistant Muna Lee placed second in the final of the 100 meters, clocking 10.777 seconds, just .001 behind winner Carmelita Jeter.
Lee and Jeter will be the U.S.'s representatives in the 100 at the World Championships in Berlin later this summer.
Beard will race in the final of the 400 meters at 7:54 p.m. Saturday. The meet will be shown live on ESPN (Ch. 27) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The top three finishers will run the 400 at the World Championships, while the top six finishers will likely make up the relay pool for the 4x400 relay.
Running in the same semifinal heat as current world leader Sanya Richards and NCAA champion Joanna Atkins of Auburn, Beard led the field of eight to the halfway point.
Richards went on to win the heat in 50.96, with Dunn the runner-up at 51.39. Beard finished in third at 51.88, while Dominique Darden clamed fourth in 52.27 to secure the last spot in the final.
Incoming Aggie Wayne Davis of Raleigh, N.C., won in the finals of the USA Junior 110 hurdles in a wind-aided 13.16. It's the second fastest prep effort all-time under any conditions.
VOLLEYBALL
Former A&M player Sykora set to compete at Pan American Cup: Three-time Olympian and former Texas A&M volleyball standout Stacy Sykora is competing for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team at the Pan American Cup, which began Friday in Miami.
Sykora and the U.S. Women's National Team began five days of pool play Friday against Costa Rica. Other teams USA will face in pool play are Guatemala on Saturday, Mexico on Sunday, Peru on Monday and Puerto Rico on June 30.
The Women's Pan American Cup is a qualifying tournament into the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix and the 2009 Women's Final Four.
Sykora was an outside hitter for the Aggies from 1995-98. She earned All-America honors in her final two seasons and joined the national team in January 1999.
