Texas A&M was leading the "Mo"Morial when rains drove players indoors during the first round Friday at Traditions Golf Club.
With Julia Boland at 2 under and Sara Beth Davis (pictured) at 1 under through 15 holes, the Aggie women's golf team was 2 over when play was suspended. Tulane stood one stroke back in second, while Tulsa was at 11 over and Texas San Antonio was 19 over.
Players will resume the first round at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, with the second round set for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The third and final round is set for Sunday.
Boland and Davis are newcomers but didn't show it, playing well enough to finish Friday atop the leaderboard. Boland, a senior transfer, used a stretch of four birdies over five holes on the front nine to grab the early one-stroke lead over Davis and Tulane's Samantha Troyanovich by one stroke.
"Julia handled herself very well today," A&M head women's golf coach Trelle McCombs said. "That's the kind of play we were hoping we would be able to get from her. I look for her to come out and continue to play strong tomorrow."
Davis, a true freshman from Victoria, finished her 15 holes without a bogey, birdieing the par-4 seventh.
"I'm not surprised at all by how Sarah Beth played," McCombs said. "She's been striking the ball very well and now it's just a matter of her gaining confidence as she goes."
A&M junior Sarah Zwartynski is in ninth at 2 over through 15 holes, while freshman Chloe Garner (75) is tied for 10th and senior Ashley Freeman (5 over through 12) is tied for 18th.
Competing as individuals for the Aggies, freshman Aly Smith (77) is tied for 18th, sophomore Kaitlin Hovda (80) is tied for 33rd, junior Alexa Porter (81) is tied for 41st and freshman Lizzy Hovda (82) is tied for 45th.
