Aggie men tied for fifth in New Mexico: ALBUQUERQUE -- The No. 7-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team is in fifth place after an even-par opening round of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course on Friday.

The 17-team field was scheduled to play 36 holes, but heavy rains forced the suspension of play late in the second round. Play will resume early Saturday followed immediately by the final round.

The defending national champion Aggies trail leader UNLV by 16 strokes. San Diego State is in second at 9 under, followed by Pepperdine and Baylor at 2 under.

A&M struggled on the greens early in the day and were 6-over par through five holes. The Aggies carded a 4-over 292 in the opening round and are 4-under in the second.

A&M junior John Hurley is 5-under with six holes left in the second round and is in seventh place, five strokes behind leader Tom Whitney of Air Force. Hurley opened with a 1-under 71 and has birdied 10 of the 30 holes he's played.

Andrea Pavan is even par and tied for 17th and Cameron Peck is tied for 31st at 2 over. Nacho Elvira is at 3 over and is tied for 41st and Geoff Shaw is at 6 over for 61st. A&M's Jordan Russell is at even par and tied for 17th and Case Cochran is at 11 over and in 92nd playing as individual medalists.

Peck, the nation's top-ranked junior amateur in 2008, bogeyed the first four holes in his college debut and was 6-over through 10 holes. He bounced back to play his last 20 holes in 4-under, including an eagle late in the opening round.

VOLLEYBALL

Aggies sweep both matches at Texas State tourney: SAN MARCOS -- Texas A&M cruised to two sweeps at Texas State's CenturyTel Premier on Friday.

In the opener, Texas A&M freshmen middle blockers Alisia Kastmo and Lindsey Miller combined for 17 kills and a .467 hitting percentage, and senior outside hitter Sarah Ammermanhas nine kills as the Aggies downed Hofstra 25-23, 25-15, 25-19 at Strahan Coliseum.

Mary Batis led A&M with 12 digs and Ammerman and freshman libero Tori Mellinger added 10 digs apiece.

In its second match, Texas A&M got contributions from all 14 players as the Aggies crushed Texas Southern, 25-7, 25-16, 25-18.

A&M led the entire match, outhitting the Tigers, .434 to .044, en route to picking up their third consecutive sweep and improving to 6-1 overall. Texas Southern fell to 4-5 and 0-2 in the tournament.

A&M starters hit .682 with 16 kills and only one error in 22 attempts in the opening set. Texas Southern also had 22 attacks but was held to a .000 hitting percentage as the Tigers had five kills negated by five errors.

Corbelli used an entirely different lineup in the second set with the exception of freshman Tori Mellinger, who played libero throughout the match. Freshman middle blocker Abby Howden appeared in the lineup for the first time this season and registered an ace with the first serve of her collegiate career.

Despite the inexperienced lineup, the Aggies hit .231 while holding the Tigers to a minus .077 hitting efficiency. Freshman middle blocker Julia Russell also saw action for the first time in her collegiate career as she started the third set and helped the Aggies jump out to an 8-1 lead.

Kelsey Black led all players with nine kills, and Mellinger took top honors in digs with 13.

The Aggies conclude the tournament Saturday against host Texas State at 2 p.m.

"Tomorrow is going to be a great match," Corbelli said. "Texas State is always in contention for their conference championship, and they've got a really nice system and have a lot of experienced players. They are at home and they have nothing to lose.
