Burgoon advances at U.S. Amateur Championship: TULSA, Okla. -- Former Texas A&M All-American Bronson Burgoon carded his second straight 73 on Tuesday to advance to match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.
Burgoon tied for 32nd in stroke play competition with a 6-over 146. Tim Jackson of Gewrmantown, Tenn., was medalist at 68-72--140.
The top 64 players from the field of 311 will begin match play on Wednesday. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
Three current A&M players tied for 88th and did not advance: junior Bryant Lach of The Woodlands (77-72--149), sophomore Jordan Russell of College Station (70-79--149) and freshman Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash. (80-69--149).

Schmidt named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week: Texas A&M freshman Mary Grace Schmidt was named the Big 12's first Newcomer of the Week for the 2009 season Tuesday.
From Orange, Calif., the 5-foot-10 midfielder scored her first collegiate goal in the Aggies' 3-0 shutout of No. 8 Southern California. With A&M's win over the Trojans, the Aggies moved up to No. 6 in both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and Soccer Time's top 25.
The sixth-ranked Aggies return to action against Purdue at 8 p.m. Friday night at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
