Hurley, Aggies win Lone Star Championship: SAN ANTONIO - The Texas A&M men's golf team cruised to a 10-stroke victory Monday at the inaugural Lone Star Invitational behind individual champion John Hurley.
The No. 18 Aggies shot a 6-under 282 in the final round to finish at 16-under 286-280-282--848 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. Texas was second at 6-under 858.
Hurley, a junior, captured his first victory at 10-under (71-64-71--206), edging Texas' Dylan Frittelli (69-69-69--207).
Four of A&M's five starters finished in the top 10 in the individual standings. Senior Andrea Pavan (73-68-69--210) tied for fourth, junior Nacho Elvira (70-74-73--217) and sophomore Geoff Shaw (73-74-70--217) tied for ninth, and freshman Cameron Peck (72-79-72--223) tied for 21st.
The Aggies close their fall schedule at the Baylor Invitational next week in Dallas.
SOCCER
Free youth and coaches clinics Tuesday: The 14th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team hosts a free youth clinic and a coaches clinic on Tuesday for participants in the U-5 and U-6 divisions.
The clinic begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium and will last one hour. Each participant must bring their own soccer ball and shin guards. Water will be provided.
Texas A&M soccer coach G. Guerrieri, his coaching staff and players conduct the clinic. Parking is available in lot 100j.
SOFTBALL
Aggies sweep doubleheader: The Texas A&M softball team tallied 20 hits in a doubleheader sweep against McLennan on Monday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Aggies won 7-0 and 5-0, while sophomore Rebecca Arbino and junior Lindsey Sisk combined for 18 strikeouts. A&M finished 6-2 in fall competition.
Kelsea Orsak led the offense, going 5 for 7 with a run. Lauren Schwirtlich went 4 for 8 in the leadoff spot with two RBIs and a run. Alex Reynolds added two walks and scored a run.
The Maroon and White Series begins at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Texas A&M softball team splits into two squads for a best-of-3 series.
TENNIS
Two A&M doubles teams advance to semifinals at ITA Texas Regional: WACO -- Texas A&M's Morgan Frank and Lauren Santacroce will face teammates Elzé Potgieter and Nazari Urbina in the doubles semifinals of the ITA Texas Regional on Tuesday after both teams won matches Monday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The semifinal match will be played at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and the championship is scheduled for 2 p.m. Potgieter and Urbina, seeded sixth, knocked off No. 2 Amanda Craddock and Krista Damico of Texas, 9-7, to advance. Frank and Santacroce, a No. 9-16 seed, defeated the Longhorns' seventh-seeded tandem of Vanja Corovic and Sarah Lancaster, 8-3.
A&M's Stephanie Davidson and Sheri Olivier reached the quarterfinals but were eliminated by North Texas' Irina Paraschiv and Madura Ranganathan, 8-6.
The doubles champions receive an automatic berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Conn.
