Sooner stampede: Oklahoma dominates A&M
Published Sunday, November 09, 2008 6:05 AM
By ROBERT CESSNA
robert.cessna@theeagle.com

Two plays before the Texas A&M football team scored its final touchdown Saturday, the cannon was fired. It was that kind of afternoon for the misfiring Aggies as the sixth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners rolled to 66-28 victory.

It was a somber Senior Day for 14 scholarship seniors and the partisan crowd of 85,603. The Aggies lost their fifth home game in a season for the first time in school history, allowing a Kyle Field record for points scored in a game by an opponent.

"I apologized to the [the seniors] for the fact that we lost," A&M head coach Mike Sherman said. "We really wanted to have a great showing today for them."

Instead, it was Oklahoma with another great showing. The Sooners beat the Aggies for the sixth straight time, and head coach Bob Stoops improved to 9-1 against A&M.

"Oklahoma's at a level right now in their program where we want to be," said Sherman, who is in his first year at A&M. "And we'll get there at some point."

Oklahoma moved closer to another Big 12 championship game, and possibly a national title tilt.

OU scored the first 28 points in breezing to its fourth straight Big 12 victory. The Sooners (9-1, 5-1) snapped A&M's modest two-game winning streak by dominating the line of scrimmage, and just about everything else.

"Overall, we were complete," Stoops said. "Our guys were great against the run, coverage, everything was really solid. We got good pressure and we came up with big turnovers."

A&M's offense sputtered while OU rolled up 653 yards, the most by an Aggie opponent since Tech had 669 in a 59-28 loss in 2003. A&M had four turnovers, 12 penalties and gained more than 31 yards on only two of 17 possessions.

"We should have played a lot better than we did," Sherman said. "We did a lot of things to self-destruct. We just couldn't get anything going offensively."

A&M (4-6, 2-4) rushed for only 26 yards, with its longest run just 9 yards among 18 carries by the running backs.

"Their D-line was very good," said A&M freshman running back Cyrus Gray, who had a team-best 24 yards rushing on five carries. "They had a lot of momentum and push on our O-line and I had to create my own holes."

It was much simpler for the Sooner backs, as 6-foot-8, 337-pound senior tackle Phil Loadholt and 6-5, 335-pound senior guard Duke Robinson were part of a line opening huge holes.

"That left tackle, gosh, there's a shadow looming on the other side of that guy," said Sherman, a former offensive line coach. "He's huge. I thought the offensive line coming into the game was a very physical group. Obviously, the rushing yards speak for itself."

OU rushed for a season-high 328 yards, averaging a whopping 8.6 yards per carry. The Sooners broke off several long runs on straight-ahead base plays.

"It's really, as far as the structure of the game, probably one of the most simple running attacks we've faced all year," A&M defensive coordinator Joe Kines said. "They do it well. Any time you do something really well with good people, you're going to have great success."

OU had a pair of 100-yard rushers in DeMarco Murray (7 carries, 123 yards) and Chris Brown (13-117, 3 TDs). The two combined to lose only 3 yards on the ground.

OU's running game set the tone with 90 yards on the first four rushes for a 7-0 lead. Murray had a 70-yard run that set up quarterback Sam Bradford's scramble for an easy 15-yard touchdown.

OU scored on its next two possessions as A&M couldn't pick up a first down. Murray caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and Brown scored on a 22-yard run as the Sooners rolled, facing only two third downs while taking a 21-0 lead.

"With the big ol' linemen they have, it's hard to move those guys and that's what football is all about," A&M linebacker Matt Featherston said. "You got to whop somebody to make a tackle."

A&M's special teams helped out the offense with Gray's 67-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. A&M needed only three plays to go 25 yards with tight end Jamie McCoy catching a 20-yard touchdown to make it 28-7.

A&M was missing wide receiver Jeff Fuller. The freshman, who had initially pledged to play at OU, couldn't go Saturday because of a quad injury. The speedy Fuller had scored a touchdown in every Aggie victory.

Fellow freshman Ryan Tannehill picked up the slack on A&M's second touchdown drive with a clutch 55-yard catch on fourth down from the Aggie 42. Johnson scrambled in from the 2 on fourth down to make it 28-14 with 5 minutes, 11 seconds left in the first half.

That was too much time for OU.

Brown scored on a 5-yard run with 2:51 left, then OU was able to tack on a field goal when Johnson was sacked on fourth down.

Juaquin Iglesias caught a 20-yard pass and Bradford scrambled for 9 yards to set up Jimmy Stevens' 42-yard field goal, making it 38-14 at the half.

A&M failed to pick up a first down to open the second half, and OU pushed its lead to 45-14 on Ryan Broyles' 23-yard touchdown catch from Bradford, who threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns.

A&M's bright spots in the second half were Gray's 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and senior quarterback Stephen McGee seeing his first extended action since reinjuring his throwing shoulder against Army. McGee completed 10 of 19 passes for 82 yards.

Aggie football is more entertaining??? It is if you mean watching the Ags get their butts kicked is your form of entertainment! Second, I have played D-1 ball, nevertheless, anyone who wants to post their opinion should be able to without your self-righteous interferrance. Kasas' coach has never played a down of football, neither has Notre Dames head coach, so maybe A&M should look at getting someone who never has either maybe it would abode better for them. Being a former player is no lock into having a successful program, no more that going into Whataburger makes you a hamberger.

Stars - I was not questioning your position on the point or timing of the hire. I appreciate your information. Mike - I envy you for seeing that bit of Aggie legend and I recognized the very lengthy amount of time between Coach Stallings A&M coaching job versus his stint at Alabama. It was to prove that a young coach can fail and still be great later. Just as a great coach can stumble later in his career. The whole Francione thing remains a mystery to me. Also, given the newsletter situation and the other issues any competent executive in any business would be putting together a contingency plan. I am sure Byrne had the search underway for quite a while and simply misspoke. I can't believe that process cycled in 24 hours.

I watched Stallings hoisted in the air by Bear Bryant at midfield of the Cotton Bowl after our win over Bama. What an exciting time it was! But even with all the hoopla Gene lacked coaching maturity which he gained after leaving A&M under his mentor Tom Landry. Gene was a much better coach when he arrived at Alabama where the pressure to win was exponetially higher than at A&M. But he proved his mettle but eventually succumbed to the stress it put on his family particularly on his son Johnny who died this past year. One last point, I agree that Sherman has to live out his time, no doubt about it. My point is that Bill Byrne is the biggest obstacle we have to success on the football field. Mr Byrne lied when he said on national tv he was immediately starting a national search for a replacement to coach Fran. I guess he meant Houston International Airport. His narrow minded approach to considering only coaches with Texas connection is B.S. Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had no connections in AL/LA or UT/FL respectively.

I don't think we are talking about warnings or whatever. Just about who in fact DID hire fran, good or bad. I mean most folks thought it was a good hire. I think at the time most of the discussion centered on whether he would start our rise to the top and then bolt for another school. He said this would be his last move but when sherman resigned for the Green Bay job he said it was the only place he would go other tha A&M (seattle, houston, etc) and when kines was not kept on at alabama, he so loved the school that he said his "next stop would be in heaven" he was not leaving town. But back to the subject. We were just debating WHO hired fran, not whether it was a good or bad move at the time. About coaches who leave for other schools. Remember, somebody else is upset when the coach leaves their program and comes to us. Can anyone name a school where, if the coach was hired, it would be guaranteed that he would never leave ???

Comment Title: What came first the chicken or the egg?
Okay, so Byrne may or may not have known about Francione's hiring. What would have warned him not to approve it? Coaches fail at one school only to succeed at another and sometimes the cycle repeats itself at the same school if the coach is there long enough. There are no guaranties for what a coach is going to do. It is not a given that an NFL coach will fail at college coaching nor is it a given that a college coach will fail in the NFL. Look at Gene Stallings for crying out loud. Run off by A&M and wins a national title at Alabama. Switzer was run off from OU. Many people out there want us to find the next Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer. For every young Stoops or Meyer there are dozens of young aspiring coaches that crash and burn. And if A&M did find one he would very likely become a candidate for an elite program that has dropped in performance and has a vacancy. Sort of like that guy that coached basketball for us and left for Kentucky or maybe like that Bear Bryant dude that left us for that school in Alabama. For all of A&M's football pride and traditions we need to realize that we would just be the next rung up the ladder for a lot of coaches. You have to find a guy that fits and loves the place and performs. And there will be good and not so good years if he is here long enough. It happens. But there should not be ANY talk about changing coaches until Sherman has a chance.

Byrne knew of the hire very late (after it was a done deal but yet to be announced) but gates and nye certainly did not require his approval on the matter. There were other AD's to choose from as well if you wanted to rock the boat at that early stage. we needed a coach no later than December.

Great news! I just saved $80 by not attending the beat down. Second highest ticket prices in the Big 12. Maybe Dollar Bill would like to buy my 10 year old, 150,000 mile pick up truck for the price of a spank'n new one! ? BS does not qualify as beef on my plate anyway.

You are naive if you do not think Byrne was not aware of the hiring of Fran. No head hunter in the nation would not have this information to share with the new hire AD...it's called due digilence and disclosure. Byrne new in advance how the dominoes were going to fall and his tacit approval was required to make sure all went well. Yes, Gates was the game changer.

Comment Title: Give Sherman a chance
RJ, Since when did a coach's attire make a good football team? Sounds like you've bought into the "style" points issue of the rankings system. Look at the NE Patriots Coach. He wears sweats. He has also done fairly well. Fran dressed nice but what did he do? I guess you could search GQ for the next coach. As far as Sherman's comments at halftime, OU IS really good. The NFL is a different type of football- only creme of the crop players make it. Then they can be swapped around to make fit. College has to deal with what you got. Sometimes big time college coaches do well there but usually not. Same goes for NFL coaches in college. As far as the 3rd qtr. mass exodus, did you think the Ags had a chance to come back? Do you enjoy being tortured? Might as well leave while you still had some weekend time left. Sherman deserves a chance. One season and some of you are ready to hang him. If I was a potential recruit, I'd look at the fan's and coach's loyalty and mentality before I signed. You might get recruited by a coach you'd like to play for and then he gets run off or leaves for a better deal for HIMSELF and you then wish you signed elsewhere. OK, so this year hasn't been your best but since when has the Big 12 S been so tough? Quiet a bit to deal with in your first year.

Thanks for the details regarding the transition and timing of Byrne and Francione. Also, Miller58 I asked you what you thought about Fran blaming his failure at A&M on QB play and poor selection of a staff. You have been ranting about the QB development he provided the program. I believe he ruined Reggie McNeal's chances for an NFL career and has greatly reduced Stephen McGee's chances also. McGee willed the team to beat tu the last two years and gave his all only to be blamed by Fran as part of the problem. Also, for the record, Fran was 4-8 his first year including the 77-0 in Norman. In his 2nd year, 7-5 including the loss to a HORRIBLE Baylor team and blowout bowl loss 38-7. In his 3rd year, lost at Kyle Field 42-14 to a HORRIBLE Iowa State Team. I would rate that a worse lost than the loss to OU this weekend. I concur with Agjosh in that you throw stuff out there and then just disappear or ignore the facts.

Comment Title: Miller - Be a man for once!!!
All you do is sling insults and accuse our coaches, ADs, and anyone else you think to name of being incompetent and unable to prove themselves. However, you constantly get directly challenged and given opportunities to defend your ludicrous comments but because they are undefendable, you just act like no one has said anything. You want the A&M staff to be accountable but your not man enough to be accountable yourself. You're a hypocrite, a nuisance, and a boil on the a#$ of college sports. If your man enough to say some of the stupid crap you say from the safety of your mom's basement then be man enough to admit when you're wrong.

Our hiring sucks! miller58.

My remarks were aimed more at FloridaMark (and others)and I agree that everyone can have a viable opinion on out team, talent, and even coaches. However, when it comes to issues regarding what motivates recruits, how coaches dress (and its impact on the team), how long it takes to get comfortable (as a player) with new schemes, and evaluating a coach and staff after less than a year...sorry, but if you've never been in that kind of locker room or been through those things then I don't think you can truly have an appreciation for them. When I hear guys talk about young players being out of position or being slow, it drives me crazy sometimes because the adjustment from the speed of the high school game to the speed of D-I is amazing. I understand that because I couldn't ever make it well enough (as is true of the majority of players by the way) to earn serious PT. There are intrinsics to the game that are just that..intrinsic - as in you can't fully understand them unless you've been there.

Comment Title: Light Years
After watching teams such as ou,tt,and tu play their game this year, I regretfully must admit that A&M probably has never been that good. Futhermore, they are light years away from ever playing at that level. I'm not sure this is the coaching staff that will ever get us to that level. Sherman can not make the most of what he has(akie state), so what is the future?

Comment Title: RE:Agjosh
I will assume your remarks are more directed at Florida Mike but let's also be honest and admit that even if he never played a down his remarks should be considered as viable as anyone who did. Playing does not qualify your ideas as superior to others. Mike Leach never played a down of college ball ANYWHERE.

Comment Title: Miller 58 and other naysayers
I have no problem with opinion differences and disagreement, but let's be honest, none of you that are so negative about Sherman ever played a down of college football. If you had, you would realize how ridiculous your comments are. We got our butts kicked Saturday because we have along way to go, but we are making strides. A&M football today is much more entertaining (and productive)on offense than in recent years. Kines and Sherman are exactly the kind of coaches I wanted to play for....hard-working, realistic, patient (but with a plan), and great hands on player developers. Also, to question our AD who has brought vast improvementa to Aggieland in facilities and in basicaly all other sports is just plain idiocy. And no, Byrne did NOT hire Fran...they were hired at the same time. Finally, to show just how dumb Miller is, here is what he said late last week and the challenge I gave him that he didnt have the manhood to take. "You (Miller) gave five measurable things to count: Dropped passes by freshman receivers on third down, number of times when the pass isnt within 10 feet of a receiver, special teams returns of more than 20 years, JJ holding the ball for more than 5 seconds before a sack or t.o., and the points OU scores versus your golf score. So here's the deal, based on a corresponding over/under of 4,3 (not counting throw aways under pressure), 3, 3, and 88 (which is way better than your golf average probably is but its mine so lets go with that)....If you are right on 3 out of 5 of these, I quit blogging here for a year. If you're wrong, you quit blogging here for a year. So here it is you windbag...Put up or shut up. And by the way, I'd much rather have ridden the bench and even scrimmaged a few times without my helmet as you suggest I must have done than to be a a never-was never-will be loser." We had 1 drop by a freshman on 3rd down (on what was almost a spectacular catch),OU had 1 special teams return > 20 yards, other than throw aways A&M had 0 ten yard misses on passes, JJ was never sacked or committed a t.o. after holding the ball for 5 seconds (he did have a sack after 3), and your golf score was far higher than OU's points. Once again, Miller is proven to be a stupid windbag.

Comment Title: RE: Florida Mike and some other stuff.
Mike...Byrne has yet to hire a D1 football coach at A&M. Make no mistake, the year before fran was hired the Big-12 conference for presidents, regents, etc was held and attended by erle nye and robert gates. They were intrigued by discussions with oklahoma representatives concerning the windfall financial dollars that the football national championship had provided their athletic department and university. Already unhappy with the direction of our program since joining the Big-12, they listened attentively as oklahoma described how it all revolved around landing that next great coach. Groff and slocum were joined at the hip so it would take two to tango. They believed they had the ability (as a lot of us do) to make that next great hire. So it came to be that on 5 december 2002, dennis franchione was formally hired as our next coach. There were of course contacts, negotiations, and contract agreements that were hammered out long before that time. THEN, in january 2003, bill byrne was hired as athletic director. The other piece of the puzzle was now in place, or so they thought. Now, unless you suggest that byrne was carrying on negotiations with franchione long before he was an employee of our system, it was impossible for him to have much to do with franchione other than to appear at some photo ops and press conferences after the fact. Byrne had a good history of head coach hires and he has made some here but this was not his. Enter franchione and all that went on afterward. Everyone wants him gone but what about the big contract ? Hey, how about a secret newsletter. If we prove NCAA violations we don't have to pay. Blows up in our face when it turns out it wasn't anything several other universities weren't already doing AND our 12th Man Foundation members were receiving copies (one paid and one comp'ed) supposedly without the athletic director or president's knowledge. Good grief, what now !! Gates is gone so nye says I got us in, I'll get us out and we'll calm everybody down at the same time. Fran was NEVER a secret handshake, cool-aid drinker from the start. This is what rubbed all those regents and high dollar contributors wrong from the get-go. Enter sherman. Now the politicians are being served but at the expense of some young men's futures not to mention the possible long-term damage being discussed on these blogs. Look at byrne's history and be honest. Sherman is a long way from his way of doing business.

Comment Title: 66 to 28...thanks Bill Byrne
Let there be no mistake Byrne hired Fran and Sherman and was part of the dump Slocum conspiracy. Sherman was hired due to the influence of the well intentioned Houston aggies. What aggieland does not understand is that Byrne has apparently never hired a successful D1 football coach. Tom Osborne was already at Nebraska when Byrne arrived. He did pick the replacement coach who was later fired. So here we are, we now have 2 disasters back to back. Sherman can't recruit and can't relate to the players...he's too old! Byrne's legacy so far is that his hires have resulted in the 66 point defeat in Kyle Field, the 77 point butt kicking we got in Norman not to menion the huge increase in season ticket prices he has hung on us. How many points do you think Texas will put up? I say probably as many as OU and, since UT hates us so much they will not show any mercy, nor should they. Bill Byrne is the worst AD in A&M history based on his football hires. There are plenty of Urban Meyer types out there but Byrne wants somebody who knows Texas H.S. football. Why? Urban Meyer didn't know squat about Florida H.S. football and look at his recruiting. Ditto with Nick Price! OU, OSU, TT and UT are killing us in the H.S. football recruiting game. We will not get better till we come to grips with these facts.

Miller58, you just slammed Fran's recruiting. Just wanted to clue you in because you need the help. I heard Doug Gottlieb (ESPN) on the radio before the game. Gottlieb was touting Fran as the perfect fit for the Kstate job. However, he stated that when pressed for questions about the dismal failure at A&M, Francione said the two biggest factors were probably QB play and poor selection of assistant coaches. Talk about Fran stabbing Stephen McGee in the back especially the way McGee fanatically defended Francione. And Miller58 what does that say about your recent postings about the development of McGee and Johnson under Francione? He blames McNeal and McGee. Let's see, two throwing QB's forceed to run the zone read/option get your QB killed offense. Also, my previous point about running that offense with this offensive line was proved against OU wasn't it? Even with McGee running it. Penetration kills it. A quick 6 for OU. I hope Fran gets the Kstate job. Miller58 I am sure there will places for you to post IF and WHEN Fran lands a new job.

Did anyone get a close look at Sherman before the game started. He had a Sloppy Sweatshirt on with a stain on the front ( HD shows everything ). Look at Stoops, Brown, Carroll, and Saban, all with the appearance that we would like having representating AGGIES. Second, did you catch the comments from the sideline reporter, Jack Arute, after halftme. He said Shermans comments after the first half were: they are really good, I mean real good, but unlike the NFL OU can only have thesr players for 4 years. I am tired of all Shermans references to the NFL, that is why he will not make it as a College Coach. Fianlly, I have been watching/going to Kyle Field for 25 years, never seen an "Exodus" like that one in the 3rd Qtr. Byrne made a mistake and needs to correct it NOW. S.Calif Aggie

Let us give Coach Sherman a chance. He just got here. He has a great staff. Give them time. Let them recruit. Remember, sometimes a "blue chip" does not work out in college. Sometimes a player not as well known winds up a starter. Dat Nyguen was not as well known, but he beat out Trent Driver. Bucky Richarson was not as well known, but he beat out Lance Pavlas. So let us support Coach Sherman and his staff. Give him time. Look at Texas Tech-they do not get nearly as many blue chippers, but they recruit the players that will work in their system. Give Coach Sherman time.

Comment Title: ou throws "fish" fry bash at Kyle Field!
My personal opinions: Ou demonstrated to some idiots why its better to sign 66 four and five star difference makers than the 33 four and five star difference makers A&M has signed the last five years! ou did it by scoring 1 point for each of the 66 they have signed; A&M coaching even fell short on this count by scoring only 28 points for the 33 difference makers they signed! In the process Mike Sherman idelibly put himself in the record books as the head coach that coached "FIVE" Kyle field losses in one season, and the second as the head coasch who allowed the opponent to score "66" points against A&M at Kyle Field. The old record of 57 points scored a head coach allowed an opponent at Kyle Field has stood since 1977! But the great news is that with the terrible recruiting class Sherman has committed, that these records will be broken again in 2009, 2010, 2011 2012, and 2013! My golf score for 18 holes Saturday afternoon was not as good as the 66 ou laid on us! miller58 "we made a mistake, admit it, fire it, and move on!"
