A common sight during Texas A&M's spring football drills is wide receiver Jeff Fuller and Jordan Pugh running side-by-side, each turning to locate the deep throw.
All eyes are on them, because they've dazzled onlookers with remarkable efforts. Just when you think there's no way Fuller can make the catch, he does by extending his 6-foot-4, 209-pound frame.
But just as often, Pugh has reached in and knocked the ball away.
That's a sight A&M football fans didn't see much of at the tail end of a 4-8 season that included Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas outscoring the Aggies 156-58. Those three opponents were 60-of-89 passing (67.4 percent) with eight touchdowns and no interceptions.
A&M ended the season ranked 108th in pass defense efficiency among 119 Bowl Subdivision Championships teams.
"You hate to finish like that, because we're all competitors, but it's something that we grew from, [and] we learned from," says Pugh, the senior from Plano West High School. "And it's something that's motivating us for this year. Last year was the past. We can't control it, but we can control what happens this year, and that's how we're looking at it."
One thing second-year head coach Mike Sherman did to improve his defense was move Pugh from cornerback to safety, teaming him with Trent Hunter who had an outstanding freshman season.
Hunter and Pugh have done a good job this spring making sure Fuller and the other receivers haven't run free when they escape the cornerback. The happy-go-lucky Pugh is constantly talking and making sure everyone is in the right spot, a strategy that seems to be helping.
"I think he's rallied the troops," Sherman said. "He and Hunter are good communicators back there and get us lined up. I think we're better with his leadership back there than without it."
Pugh certainly understands about change. This is his second move from corner to safety at A&M, and he admits the moves can be a hurdle at times.
"But I wouldn't say it is tough, because you get to learn the defense," Pugh said. "You get to know how every position works. Say one guy is down or going through something -- I've been through it, too. And it's fun. I like it, and it's game experience, not just for me, but for the defense."
Pugh has been moved because of his strengths, not his weaknesses. He led the team in tackles as a sophomore and was fifth last year. He has a nose for the ball, and that trait has helped him blossom this spring at safety.
"It's my personality," Pugh said. "I think [safety] fits me better. I love playing corner, don't get me wrong, but I love safety, too. You get to see [what's] on the run plays, on the pass plays. It just fits me more. I love it ... it's me. It's how I play, the way I play. I'm embracing it right now."
Most of the Aggie wide receivers have taken spills this springs as proof, especially Fuller.
"You love going against the best if you like the competition," Pugh said. "You can't let him win. It's the offense-defense thing. It's good competition between the both of us."
Fuller is preparing Pugh for what's ahead. Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas along with Oklahoma State return their starting quarterbacks with good to exceptional receiving corps, and all are South Division foes who beat A&M last year.
Pugh thinks things could be different this fall if the Aggies stick together, something he's trying to help the defense do.
"We have the ability. Everybody has the ability," Pugh said. "We have the speed. We have the base set. It's just staying together on defense."

Comment Title: Sherman was a winner in the NFL
Stop the hating on Sherman. He didn't win a Super Bowl, but then so have many other quality coaches. I have read over and over again how hard it is to win in the NFL, so let's not belittle the man's record. That said, of course none of that matters.. he has to WIN at Texas A&M or he will be fired. When? That's what this fun is all about. I think he has to go to a bowl (any bowl mind 'ya) THIS year. You said he wasn't hired after leaving Green Bay as a Head Coach, I'm sure the other side of that coin is that he didn't want to be considered for the position... 'GIG 'EM!!!!! Sherman won at green bay in a very weak division. His employers, who may have been in a better position to evaluate him than we are, felt the same. They fired him. Most others seemed to agree with their reasoning judging by the fact he never got another head coaching job afterward (of couse til his promotion here).

Comment Title: Sherman
Please note a breakdown of Sherman's coaching tenure at Greenbay. His final season he lost: Javon Walker, Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport, Bubba Franks to injury and offensive linemen Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera to free agency. You can only carry 53 on your roster in the NFL, so losing 4 starters/stars to injury contributed to his poor season. He was successful at that level, so one season should make or break his tenure at Texas A&M. If he does not show improvement in the next 2 years then a change needs to be discussed. Heck Fran got 5 seasons. Cannot be worse than that. In his six-year head coaching career with the Packers from 2000–05, Sherman compiled a 57–39 regular season record and a 2–4 postseason record. Sherman had used the West Coast Offense offensive strategy at Green Bay.[9][10] In 2000, Sherman became the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. He led the Packers to five consecutive winning seasons from 2000–04. From 2002–2004, he led the Packers to three consecutive NFC North Division titles. From 2000–04, he compiled a 53–27 record, and a .663 winning percentage, which is the second highest in Packers history, trailing that of Vince Lombardi's, who is one of the most successful coaches in the history of football. Additionally, Green Bay and the Philadelphia Eagles were the only two teams to make the playoffs for four consecutive seasons from 2001–04. An offensive-minded coach, Sherman led the Packers to break franchise records for rushing in 2003 and passing in 2004. In 2003, Packers quarterback Brett Favre led the NFL in touchdown passes, in addition to setting a franchise record for rushing yardage. The 2003 team also gained a total of 442 points, which is second only to the franchise's record of 456 set in the 1996 season, when the team won the Super Bowl. Despite receiving a contract extension earlier in the 2005 season, Sherman was fired by the Packers on January 2, 2006, after compiling a 4–12 record — Green Bay's first losing record since the 1991 season. The Packers had lost pro bowlers Javon Walker, Bubba Franks and Ahman Green to Injured Reserve early in the season.[11]

Good to see some rational posters. This tired babble by the same auto posters is really boring. ---- Yes these recruits look good, no ratings assinged except to the Rivals 250 watch list. Another good indication is the AY125 list which many/most are on. The quality of other schools is another good indication. So yes! So far so good. They need to close on the 4 star linebackers and several qaulity DBs. --- As far as passing judgement on the staff as coaches and player developers, it is insane to make any comment about last year based on the horrible job Fran did recruiting. No O-line, no LBs, no DTs, we were in sad shape. --- As far as torn labrums go it appears that Sherm had Stephen's best interest in mind because it looks like McGee will be drafted. -- This is another good sign. -- Maybe too early to tell yet but I think it is headed in the right direction.

First, I wouldn't say that Saban or Weis inherited as bad of a team as Sherman did. In Weis' first year he lead Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija, two hellacious athletes, to a BCS bowl game. I would be willing to bet that going to a BCS game would help with recruiting. And to your comment about how there are coaches that could come in and compete within the Big 12 in their second year- No team of Fresh and Soph's would ever be able to play with OU, Tech, and Texas, no matter how many "difference makers" are out on the field. In the past two weeks we have gotten some pretty good recruits. Let's give the staff a little bit of credit. They are creating a pipeline with the Metroplex, something that we haven't had since the mid 90's. We also managed to land the Joekel brothers (who many were saying we didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting). This is what I challenge you to Miller: let's not bash the coaching staff about recruiting for one whole weekend. If you want to talk about how we are moving to a 3-4 defense and how we don't have the size at DT to do so, go ahead. But just give this Easter weekend a break.

You say there are 16-18 HC's in America who could RIGHT NOW take over the Aggie football program and "recruit and win." What you really mean is "do better than Mike Sherman." OK. Name them. Please. I'm waiting. And once and for all, your lies about Sherm's stay in Green Bay are absolutely libelous. He had a very successful track record at Green Bay UNTIL a rash of devasting season-ending losses to several key starters killed a season. Unfortunately, that's not an excuse in the dog-eat-dog world of NFL football, but it doesn't make him a bad coach. JEEZ! Finally, if yout hink Sherm is such a bad recruiter, you need to read Denton Ryan commit Garrett Grambling's comments in the local paper there, the Denton Record-Chronicle. not so sure these are 1 stars sherman is recruiting, just that the recruiting services try to FIRST 'label' the top 250 kids (natioanlly) for upcoming year, and will then get around to assigning stars to remaining players. Even some players that haven't been assigned the magic 4* will be. look at last years top 100 from texas. there were 48 4* players and the top 24 of those kids were good enough to get into the national top 250 (RIVALS.com). so that still leaves 18 kids that were ranked as 4*'s, but just not listed in top 250 players in country. so more than likely we have some more 4*'s and a bunch of 3*'s for the 2010 class. just wait until the gurus finish ranking all the soon to be seniors before you buy into millers rants.
