Oklahoma is having problems stopping the run, but because the Sooners have scored at least 35 points in every Big 12 game, it hasn't been a concern.
And Texas A&M might be hard pressed to make it an issue Saturday at Kyle Field. The Aggies have rushed for only 242 yards in the last three games, even while throwing for 881 yards.
A&M is averaging 362.2 yards per game, 251.6 of it through the air. A&M's 110.7 yards rushing a game ranks 102nd nationally. OU is much more balanced, averaging 358.9 passing and 179.4 on the ground.
"I've always believed in balance, and we don't have the balance I'd like to have this year," A&M first-year head coach Mike Sherman said. "I wish we could have better balance than we do. We fight it a little bit when we're trying to game plan and scheme and trying to play to our strengths and someone else's weaknesses. But I'd like to have balance in our offense.
"When you're throwing the football, you just never know when your quarterback is going to wake up and the biorhythms aren't clicking, or a receiver for whatever reason isn't having a good day."
A&M's 24-17 victory over Colorado supported Sherman's point.
Sophomore quarterback Jerrod Johnson got off to a slow start -- 6-of-14 passing for 62 yards -- but rallied to throw a trio of touchdown passes in the third quarter.
Sherman says he would rather not rely so much on the right arm of Johnson, who is 160-of-254 passing in the last eight games.
"The running game is something that, if you have good running backs, can be a consistent part of your arsenal," Sherman said. "The passing game with the weather, the wind, whatever ... it can affect the passing game a bit, so I hate to put all my eggs in one basket. I think you have to throw the football to win championships, but to be able to get to the championship game, you have to be able to run it."
Sherman, a former offensive line coach, knew he'd have to revamp the running game. A&M had only eight scholarship offensive linemen for spring drills. The Aggies have been further hampered by injuries on the line and to junior tailback Mike Goodson, who has missed the last two games with a knee injury.
Freshman tailback Cyrus Gray gave the Aggies a spark last week with a 54-yard run that led to a touchdown and a 24-10 lead. But other than that, the Aggie running backs struggled, rushing for 2 yards or less 11 times.
"We did have a couple of chances to make some positive gains besides the long run by Cyrus Gray, but not enough to meet the satisfaction that we needed," Sherman said. "I think what we did come away from the game with was it's so important to keep hammering away at it because it does help you control pass rushes. And that long run that Cyrus made really was a game-changer in my mind. It changed field position for us, really put us in an optimal position. So even though we didn't run the ball effectively, I think the fact we didn't give up on it is a great lesson. I constantly remind myself that you just never know when you're going to be able to find a crack and be able to break a long run, and that one was a significant one."

The Aggies should have running opportunities against OU, which has given up a significant amount of yardage after shutting down the run in nonconference play. The Sooners held Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Washington and TCU to 73 yards rushing per game, which ranked 12th nationally.
But in Big 12 play, OU has allowed at least 134 yards rushing per game, and league opponents are averaging 5.4 yards per carry (if you take away OU's 15 sacks). Baylor was the first to have success this season rushing the ball behind dual-threat quarterback Robert Griffin, who had 102 yards on 21 carries. Texas then handed OU its lone loss by rushing for 161 yards on 35 carries.
That game was costly for OU's run defense, which lost linebacker Ryan Reynolds to a season-ending knee injury. Reynolds was the league's fourth-leading tackler -- and is still OU's fourth-leading tackler.
This week, OU also will be without defensive tackle Auston English who has a sprained knee. English has 28 tackles, including nine for losses.
Last week, OU gave up 204 yards rushing to Nebraska, but it didn't figure in the outcome as the Sooners had a 35-0 lead after the first quarter en route to a 62-28 vicory.
The Aggies, a 25 1/2 -point underdog, have been able to run the football against the Sooners in the last four meetings at Kyle Field, which have been decided by a total of 16 points. Goodson had 127 yards rushing on 10 carries two years ago in OU's 17-16 victory.
A&M has averaged 37 rushes in its last four meetings with OU at Kyle Field. The Aggies have rushed for more than 37 times only once this season, carrying 39 times for 92 yards in a 28-22 victory at New Mexico.
*
NOTES -- Goodson practiced Tuesday. He was limited but wearing shoulder pads, said A&M assistant athletics director Alan Cannon. ... Sherman, who talked during Monday's press conference about the importance of the individual contributing to the team effort, exercised his right to vote. He was an absentee voter since he's still registered in Houston. ... OU is in danger of having its string of Top 20 finishes in run defense end at seven. OU (116.6 ypg) is ranked 35th. The Sooners were 17th last year (110.3 ypg) and have had a pair of Top 10 finishes including fourth in 2005 (90.6 ypg). ... A&M has been held under 100 yards rushing four times this season, winning two of those games. The program had been 2-28 the previous 30 times it was held under 100 yards rushing.

Comment Title: OU fans - OU defense
Brad & Sooner, I have only attended one game in Norman (1998 - Dat & Dante won the year the Ags won the Big12) and I went away very impressed by the fans at Ownen field. You guys were suffering through the Blake years but were very civil even to your own under performing team. ----- We still owe you guys for the 77-0 beat down you put on Coach Francis' team. I'm hopin' we get an RC Slocum/Reggie McNeal surprise on you this year! ----- With regards to Cessna's stats I just looked up on the Big 12 website the "Conference" stats. OU is ranked 6th against the run at 138.2 per game, 8th against the pass at 298.2, and 7th overall at 437.0. I think this could be what Cessna had in mind and it takes out the powerhouses like Chattanooga & Washington, not that our schedule is nay saltier. Maybe their defense is not invincible! Gig'em Aggies! BTHO ou

Comment Title: Re: JW "70" - Sooner in Aggieland
My personal opinions: Entirely Hypothetically, We all remember the Aggie Spin Machine lying about the " new emphasis on Recruiting", last fall? Well I thought I was a lock for the head coach job at the interview. Telling them about my great success at recruiting top talented five star tall goodlookin' blonds at the local bars seemed to really get their attention; their eyes really lit up as they ask for more detail about my scoring touchdowns? I expected a positive responce almost immediately? Instead I was told they intended to go with a 10 man coaching staff that had in the previous 5 years, only recruited a total of 2 difference makers; and those difference makers weren't even 5 star ones, they were both only four stars and not even "tall, blond and goodlookin"? In shock, I was privately advised that the abilty to recruit and win was not even a consideration; and that Ag ticket buyers were stupid enough to support any loser they chose to put on Kyle Field. They advised me that with the internal politics of hiring at A&M, the only qualification to be head coach was for McKinny and RC to have a mancrush on you, not being able to just recruit well or even to win was not a consideration at all? miller58.

It is all Aggies that have the blinders on and think Sherman is capable of producing a winner. He was not hired because he had proven he could win, rather because of his A&M connections. I hate to see it as much as anybody but us Ag's have got several more years of low quality football. The really sad part is that it is the players that are hurt the most.

Here's another chance for the Ags to make some noise. Don't think it's going to happen, but anyway... I agree with the "boomer" comment. Don't get upset IF the score gets run up. You all know about the "style" required now. AND NOW, for my favorite part- HEY MILLER, what do you do for a living? If you know SOOoo much, why aren't you coaching the Aggies??? (now watch)

Hello Aggie fans - I am looking forward to another great Big 12 South contest Saturday in your backyard. Unfortunately, I can't make it to the game this year but have been in the past and tremendously enjoyed myself. You guys are class acts and treated myself and family with nothing but the utmost respect. Now on a more serious note, don't get upset if we have to turn up the score on you. We whipped Nebraska 62-28 and dropped 2 spots - Hilarious! Anyways, we might have to pull another 77-0 on you just to ensure we don't drop again. Of course, it could be a close game, because it is difficult at Kyle Field. The bottom line is lets have fun and enjoy the game. Coach Sherman will have you guys back in the mix in no time. BOOMER!

Comment Title: Thank you Spud
Thank you, Spud. I seldom track back to read what I wrote here or any other place online. I simply do not have the time. I did, however, pull this article up last night, and I read that post from someone asking me for sources. I was like... "okay, fine... but sheesh, that was last week, and that newsprint is in the recycle bin!" But, heck, I was gonna find the date, article title, etc. Know what? I don't need to. If that guy wants to read it for himself, he can go to both The Rocky Mountain News or The Denver Post, both online, and pull the stories up. I mentioned those articles, because they struck me in a very positive way, all the way up here in the Rockies, because they shed light on just how well respected our team is, even in a down year. If I post something here, its fact, and more so, its from my own head and my own heart. The truth is, other schools in our conference see what is happening at A&M, in just this first year of a regime change. They also are beginning to respect this first year player, Johnson. I can't even imagine how good this kid will be next year. Spud, you from West Texas, too, eh? When did you wear the maroon and white? Heck, we may know each other, and yes, I go to Denver on business often, so... And miller?... I just wanna take a sweat soaked sock and stick it in your mouth, just do an inverted insertion in the orange water cooler! Enough, already.

I have got to be mistaken somewhere. I read this article and just had to check. This couldn't be true. And guess what, it isn't. As of today (11/06/08) A&M ranks #27 in passing offense (252 ypg), ou ranks #90 in passing defense (237 ypg).........A&M ranks #102 in rushing offense (111 ypg), ou ranks #35 in rushing defense (117ypg). And Cessna thinks we should be running, not throwing???????? I am not trying to be funny here but did I miss his point ???

The discipline I am speaking of is requiring accountability on and off the field. After all that is his #1 priority--growing quality young men that A&M can be proud of. As for evaluating personnel I have personnaly witnessed him in action and at the time wonder why cold on some of our area "blue Chips" only to look back now and see that they were busts. The disparity in the recruiting polls is so great (one has us at 7th and one at 17th) I don't know how you can pay attention to them for any other reason than entertainment purposes.

Comment Title: re:colorado-sources for articles
as another west texas boy who played ball, i now live in denver and can vouch for the articles that txaggiencolo sited. the denver post ran several articles on the aggies last week as cu was getting ready to play them. and yes, they did talk of the unstoppable offense and that other big12 teams better watch out if we can get the wrecking crew back on track. miller-seeing as that was more than likely your post calling for some sources-how about some sources for any of your rants-ie: sherman can't evaluate talent, sherman can't instill discipline, and my favorite-. "why are all the Division 1 coaches laughing their rears off at the thought of playing a Mike Sherman coached and recruited Texas A&M team in the future?" etc? what coach is actually going to say that? i might actually make it thru your entire post if you can give me some of your sources.

Comment Title: You mention" Sherman's phlosophy of discipline, basics, and a bright future?"
My personal opinions: Now that statement is truly laughable! Sherman's "inability to instill discipline" and "inability to evaluate player personel" were the two biggest reasons Sherman was fired at Greenbay, multiple sources agreed. Can you ever imagine A&M turning over its football team to somebody with these recent failures? Wait? They went on to explain how these failures cost Greenbay multiple losses over the years. They agreeded that "a new coach instilling discipline immediately improved the team and especially Farve"! It was pointed out that this new coach took Greenbay to the nfl championship game with almost the same players, in only the second season after Sherman was removed. Can you imagine a head coach that can't evaluate players in a nfl draft or an A&M recruiting class, offering a bright future, even if he didn't lose every head to head on over 40 players offered? How bad has A&M's recruiting fallen? Today of all the teams in the Big 12 south, tu, ou, tech, osu, A&M and baylor, only Baylor has recruited less four and five star players than A&M; and with A&M full and Baylor with room, baylor can also pass A&M by Feb 09! We used to out recruit all these teams except tu and ou, no more! miller58. Comment Title: To a Recruit which is more important?
If a coach tells a difference maker he will get a good shot at playing, will that help sway him to signing? --- What shows the player that this is not a hollow promise? Could that be the number of freshmen and Red Shirts contributing on game day? --- A winning program is essential to maintain the recruiting train but kids getting a chance to play gets the train rolling.

Miller 58 you are doing more harm to our recruiting than our won/loss record ever could. Do you not think recruits are on these boards reading your comments? If you are not going to buy another ticket until we get so many 4-5 star recruits then you should probably send your ring back too (if you ever had one) because you have missed what being an Aggie is all about. We try to go to every game no matter the outcome because every game is homecoming. The stars you are so found of, given by some recruiting service, are very unreliable. The better the HS coach is at selling his player the more stars he gets. Jerrod Johnson was listed as a 4 star prospect--at tight end. While Sherman was here before, he recruited my area of the state (southeast)and was highly respected by all the HS coaches. According to scout.com there are only 7 five star prospects in the state. 3 of which are quarterbacks. We currently don't need a QB. The area we are most in need is O-Line. Rhonte Scales and Clint Naron are huge, strong, and well coached. They will be difference makers. Coach Craig Stump should help steer Christine Michael to us from Westbrook High. Coryel Judie brings immediate experience as a JUCO transfer and Nwachukwu (translates--great hands) should have an immediate impact as a deep threat. Overall, we have a very solid group of commits. Group those with our young players already in place, Sherman's philosophy of instilling discipline and strong basics, the future looks very bright in Aggieland

Comment Title: It WILL Happen....
Up here in the mountains, where I live, far from my roots in West Texas, I read the Aspen Daily News, the USA Today and the Denver Post, daily. Late last week, there was a really nice piece in the Denver Post written about Jerrod Johnson, A&M's first year quarterback. Whatever you may think about the kid, he's starting to garner some serious attention and recognition. The article also said, in that writer's opinion, that "there is a huge, dangerous fire brewing in Aggieland, again." Colorado was scared poopless to come play us at Kyle, fyi. The article also said that what's scary about Texas A&M, in this first year of a new regime, is that our offense is pretty much on the way to being an unstoppable offense. It continued to say that if we get what need on defense, and start to play like the A&M of old, which is DEFENSE!.... "then college football and the Big 12 better watch out!" Me, personally? We will be in the top 10 again within 2 years. And A&M is the only school in major D1 football that can, has, did, and will win with "3-star" players. Folks, I played, I bled, and I gave all that had for my team, my school. And I didnt' play with very few prima donnas. For an ol' country boy like me to beat the prima donnas like the t-sips, well, folks there ain't nothing better than that. Its not about the star ranking or number of 4-5 star recruits, is about the system, the coaches, the players, the will, the drive. Give me 22 Trent Hunters, and I'll sell my business and coach, and I'll win a championship. And Miller?... You really need to shut the @$#%@$ up. I don't know whether to laugh or throw darts at your picture all day!

My personal opinions:_____NO!_____I agree with you that first year coaches don't win as much, but the good ones always recruit lights out that first year, so there is hope for improvement the next year or two! In our case we just got a bad coach that with his terrible recruiting offers no hope for improvement in the future. Remember we won 7 and 9 regular season games the last couple of years, and A&M committed 14 four and five star players just last year. Certainly I agree that JJ is looking potentially adequate, but Sherman wasn't there to even recruit, or develop him the last couple of years! There have been good reports from time to time on jj the last couple of years long before Sherman even arrived, as well as Tannahill and Dorman. Sherman just is a recruiting loser, that can't compeat with stoops and mac for players, and recruiting wins (or loses?)up to 90% of your games; over forty 4 and 5 star offers, and Sherman losing every head to head, please be serious? miller58.

Comment Title: Re: football challenged Joe!
My personal opinions: Joe, the four and five star theory says according to Division 1 coaches that you win (or lose?) up to 90% of your games at the time you sign the high school seniors. For the 80+%, that means that you win up to 10 of your regular season games at the time of signing high school seniors (which mac does) and you win (or lose?) the other two with your coaching. Well Mac has proven again he can't coach and loses one of those two already?! ie. snapping the ball on the goal line with 20 seconds left on the time clock, instead of snapping it at 2 seconds, and tech doesn't have time to win. I meam A&M has more 4 and 5 star talent than these teams, but crappy coaching by Sherman was also able to overcome this advantage, and lose to: Ark state 18-14; okie state 56-28; tech 43-25; k state 44-30; play the other two bottom teams close, isu and colorado; and get blown out by miami 41-23. Now I know that's a lot for one of the proven football challenged 80+% to digest so keep this post handy and re-read it daily, until you get it, if ever! miller58.

Good lord would you just shut up, havent you gotten the point yet no one cares about what you say. All you talk about is how many 4 or 5 star recruites we have or we are getting. Who cares!?! You can have great talent without having the best players on paper because alot of kids are better than what it says on paper. The team is tremendously better now that we have a new offense and we will have alot more high recruits (such as wide recievers, QB's, tightends) looking to go to A&M now that they now they will actually get to catch some balls instead of just be decoys for a straight run game. So just get off the computer and go read something that can actually make you sound legit on here.

Comment Title: oklahoma vs Texas A&M - Quick Analysis ?
My personal opinions: With A&M enjoying a 3 point home field advantage even before the kickoff, you can expect a close game! With an ou defense completely devastated by injuries, you can expect a close game even before the kickoff! Once the kickoff occurs, if you expect a close game, you can look very stupid! ou has signed 66 four and five star players in the last five years, A&M has signed 33 so ou enjoys a huge talent advantage; a talent advantage, by he way, expected to be even larger next year with Sherman's grossly crappy recruiting this year! To keep it interesting beyond the first quarter, start from the kickoff to count the total number of third down passes that go right through the fish receivers hands; then, to pass the time, also count in total turnovers JJ has; the number of fumbles due to the way he is not coached to hold the ball loosely and also the number of errant passing throws! With a good coaching staff, playing to win, A&M would compeat nicely; with this current coaching staff playing only to give questionable talented fish spring training, a 60 to 20 blowout loss is about wrong? D1 coaches will continue to laugh theie rears off, at the thought of playing a Sherman Texas A&M coached and recruited team in the future! The line is ou by 25. miller58
