McGee takes first snaps as Dallas Cowboys QB

The Dallas Morning News

IRVING -- When the Cowboys drafted Stephen McGee in the fourth round of last weekend's NFL draft, owner and general manager Jerry Jones mentioned some "nine-ish" qualities the Texas A&M quarterback had in common with Tony Romo, who wears No. 9.

For the first time on an extremely small scale, McGee was able to show those skills at the rookie minicamp, and Jones said he "liked the way he threw the ball."

McGee admitted he has a lot to learn about the Cowboys' offense after running through Friday's morning practice.

"[Romo's] one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, so that's about as good a compliment as I can get," McGee said. "I don't think I'm close to anything that resembles No. 9 right now. I've got a long way to go, a lot of offense to learn. I'm excited to be learning from a guy like Tony Romo. It doesn't get any better than that, and a guy like Jon Kitna, a guy who's played 14 years. That's pretty awesome."

this article was supoosed to be about that man who lost his legs, but the responses reveal that ppl don't care about the tragedy. these sports freaks use kids for their youth and strength and throw them away once they have an injury or older. basically these players are ruining their bodies for your entertainment. this guy who lost his legs will never walk again, he probably has played sports all his life, but now his legs don't work he will be nothing to the sports community. sooo sad, i heart goes out to the family.

DRLGSIDEWAYS- I rpomise you will also be happy when sherman leaves. I was happy when they hired fran. He had a track record of sucess. How happy can you be about hiring sherman with zero college headcoach experiance let alone a sucessful track record. Let alone youthful age and or modernized offensive and defensive schemes and no real record of good recruting. Technically it is too early to tell but REALISTICLY we can all see that its a failure waiting to happen. Miller is crazy and extereme and defends fran for no reason but he is spot on about Sherm.

Comment Title: RE: drlgsideways - "too early to tell"
It will not be "too early to tell" at the end of this season. You state with no real indications of improvement (big subjective area) that a coaching change should be made and I for one agree. Back to the poll. It seems one disappointment would be another remake of the defense. Not due to injury but due to effectiveness. To defend these new attacks look around the nation and you see the trend of placing athletes and speed on the field at the expense of some size. Big safetys are moved to OLB slots and OLB's are moved to DE slots. Everything is moving up to cover the speedy slot receivers, backs, and perimeter running games. You have to know this defensive version we are implementing will not stand up through the season. While effective with some parts of the attack, it becomes very vulnerable in other areas. Another disappointment is nobody is CLEARLY stepping up to take McGee's spot as the leader. And something that bothers me is that we are in NO position to be responding to leach's comments with official statements. The rest of the conference is loving every second of it. Leave it alone. We will see what happens.

Comment Title: If I am Dridge
I prefer answers to questions. You did not answer any of them but only tossed out the stuff that you post over and over and over again. And predictably, you fell back on the hypothetical, mythical recruiting class Francione had coming. Where were the previous classes? Would you like to plot the number of points surrendered by A&M over the last 10 -12 years and then point out when Francione arrived on campus? A&M's grand defensive legacy was thrown out because "Slocum left the cupboard bare with too few linebackers to run the 3-4". Yet 4 to 5 years later A&M is starting a Juco transfer and an exArmy "old" guy at linebacker in a freaking 5-2 because of a lack of depth. And you never respond to this. You always offer up the crap that Francione was fired just before he had the chance to restock the empty cupboard he inherited from Slocum. But you want to fire Sherman because he has left the cupboard bare after two recruiting classes when the final grade on those classes are not in (and one has not played a single snap). And that final grade is not determined by one of the many recruiting services or by you or Stars or me. It will be determined by the players' development. Studs in high school are all too frequently duds in college. Or you go on and on about losing in recruiting in the out years 2010, 2011? Really? Seriously? We know how good a kid is going to be when he is a sophomore in high school? And we also know the kid won't change his mind and decommit? Francione kept Torbush who should be called Tortchbush or Toast for 3 seasons? But Kines should be run off after one season given the mother lode of players Francione left behind? Under Francione it was disaster after disaster. Gave away the OU game in 2006 when everyone in the stadium KNEW he was screwing up. Or how about OU 77 A&M 0 and OU could have put 120 on A&M? Lost to Baylor. For every stat you throw out about Sherman's one season there is a like stat from Francione. Yeah, we beat tu twice but it was more a result of Stephen McGee being a tough, competitive, refuse to lose, leader in the first game. Francione's swan song victory over Texas was the kind of football (offense) we should have been seeing all along. Francione squandered talent on a massive scale. He ruined Reggie McNeal's development with an offense that was basically zone read left, zone read right. You did not need to be a football genius to know that Reggie did not like getting hit. His performance always dropped off immediately after someone lit him up. So having him run zone read and option was a great decision. Francione repeated squandering talent with Stephen McGee. And then after getting fired he blamed McGee and the assistant coaches. But that Francione guy was a hell of a coach wasn't he? I mean look at how Martellus became one hell of a blocker! I knew you would not answer the questions. And Stars how much better was the 2008 Big 12 vs 2004, 2005, 2006, etc? That should be considered as a question for your proposed poll. Again, if at the end of this season, there are no real indications of improvement, then a coaching change should be made. And finally, where will Francione end up coaching next? I was glad when we hired him and I was equally glad when he left. Me, personnaly, I cannot look at his tenure and not write it off as a very large step backwards for the program. So are we making progress with Sherman? It is too early to tell.

Sorry, sideways I get the question now. Just wasn't paying attention to the poll. I don't go there because they are manipulated and contrived. For instance. How do you think this poll quetion would be answered. WHY DO YOU THINK SHERMAN IS NOT WINNING MORE GAMES? (A). Because we don't have a good surface for all the speed he recruits (B) Because all the coaches he hired have no college experience to speak of (C) Because he can't recruit (D) Because franchione left him a bare cupboard. ........ Go read the poll again......See what I mean.

Comment Title: RE: drlgsideways
It has always been my point that this school is SEVERAL coaching staffs removed from what anyone would consider an annual national contender. You can't compare SWC to B-12 or 1965 to 2010. That's what the fantasy games are for. Franchione couldn't get it done and Sherman is struggling as well. We are not even close to tu or ok who pick our recruiting grounds clean but we are losing ground to baylor and tt either through recruiting or coaching. We sound like tcu. Why do we keep muddling around with these types in the first place. Most schools who can't attract a top coach experience failure because of facilities, fan base, local recruiting opportunity, etc, etc. Been over it all before. A&M suffers from NONE of this. As a matter of fact, they are probably at the top of the nation in any category you, as a prospective coach, would like to measure. So what's the holdup. The problem here is that the school can't get out of it's own way. They either want to be too "involved" (with influential alumni) in what the new coach is doing thus turning off any good prospect that may consider the program OR they never give the process a chance to work in the first place because they make the political hire which eliminates the risk of having their influential alumni upset. Until that mindset is eliminated this potentially very mighty machine will rust in the field. Also, with regard to where the coaches are now. Coaches tend to travel in packs, leaving only one or two behind at each stop. These guys can be traced back to their Holy Cross days. So when the grenade takes out all of them with a head coach firing they are scattered to the wind no matter who they are (slocum). The head coaches also ride out their guaranteed salaries for several years rather than forfeit them with another coaching job. Lastly, I'm not trying to be funny here but I really missed what you were trying to say about "a category for defensive improvement" for my behalf.

Comment Title: Questions
I do find a few things interesting: 1. Miller demanding answers when he avoids questions tossed to him: Why couldn't Francione establish ANY semblance of a defense in his five or was it six recruiting classes? Same question regarding the offensive line. 2. How has Sherman left the cupboard bare after two recruiting classes (one of which reports this fall) given the situation with Francione mentioned above in question 1. 3. Where is the mighty, savvy, up to date, modern, coaching staff Francione assembled? Could you please list the high schools, jucos and small colleges where they are currently working? 4. Any thoughts by anybody on the results to the poll question regarding the biggest disappointment in this spring training? I can't speak for Jim Bob but I swear I have not been padding the results in favor of the offensive line. I wish they had included a category for defensive improvement for Stars behalf. My personal opinion:_____our defensive looks good when they are going against our offense. Rebuilding a stud offensive line will also help our defense get better. Francione was a disaster. I don't see how anyone can come up with any other conclusion unless you are his mom or his wife. And Miller don't go getting all nostalgic about what might have been had Francione stayed. He had a hell of lot more time than Sherman and you seem perfectly content to run Sherman out but forgive Francione?

Bottom Line---Sherman will have to get familiar with today's college game before he can recruit the right talent for it. Everyone out there must know that the game and the 2010 teenager is different today than they were 12-15 years ago when the majority of this staff was last involved.

Comment Title: Re; CenterL and the unknown poster
CenterL, I understand your point. Don't know if I agree but I can understand your reasoning. Thanks for the post. The final analysis will prove us right or wrong. To the unknown poster, how can you say sherman has this player evaluation gift that seems to escape all other top program coaches in the nation. If he does then how can he watch kids all year and continue to switch them from position to position and from offense to defense, not because of injuries but because he thinks "after watching him for a year he feels his natural position" is more suited to where he moved him to this time. And if he knew so much about player evaluation why do we keep shifting defenses around as he realizes a little late that he needs more speed on the field than what he thought he had with the first group. Oh, and the rest of the entire nation has decided that if a kid commits to tu he will get a higher star ranking than if he commits to usc, fla, A&M, etc. Thats weak. And now you tell me he can watch 50 feet of tape and talk to the local minister and make a call on a kid who graduates more than a year from now. I am with Seeing Stars on this sort of thing. Justify how you commit a kid as a quarterback who has never been the starter at his school or another one who is an option quarterback for a pro-style offense he has never run or demonstrated proficiency at. And we might do well to stop waving the character integrity flag because you don't know those things til at least a year after you sign him and that monster is already raising its head with that last dwi.

miller should be totally ignored. Sherman & staff do their own evaluations. Rivals is based in austin & compiles opinions. tu commits get high ratings because they are tu commits (they've got good ones, don't get me wrong - just understand the system a little). Sherman & staff are bring in players to fill needs. These are experienced coaches evaluating 17 year old kids. They did pretty good on short notice with '08 class, they've done even better with '09 coming in this summer - lot's of help & lots of speed. Word on the steet IN COLLEGE STATION is the class of '10 will be an very good class, possibly OUTSTANDING!!! So far, Sherman & staff have upgraded classes each year so far. What more can you ask for? They are all young men w/ outstanding character, grades & athletic ability. We're on the right road & just need time to develop this talent. Also understand, miller loves Fran & Fran totally left the cupboard bare in offensive & defensive linemen, linebackers, receivers, etc, etc, etc..

Miller's passion though extreme is closer to a realistic take than just about every other poster on this site. If you want to be hopeful then so be it. If you want to be realistic then challenge miller with FACTS that dispute his concerns. Calling him names and bullying him around only proves that his info is truly worth being concerned about. You cant say we will never be equal to TX and OU in one breath and predict 9 or more wins in the next. There are other teams between OU and TX that we cannot beat which totally squashes many of the W/L predictions i see here. Lets worry about middle tier before we worry about upper tear wins. Or just continue to be hopeful which is fine but dont bash miller as he seems to be the ONLY person truly worried about a program that cant crack the top 100.

Comment Title: Sorry about the second question.
Yes I forgot to address the question, sorry. The reason why most of the prospects are not ranked is because rivals do not have film to rank them. Since there is an abundance of prospects around the country, it takes an extremely long time to either see in real life, or watch tape of everyone. The ones that are ranked are usually from powerhouse schools and have already created a lot of buzz around their name. However these early evaluations can change because of the way people play as seniors. Also it takes into account their development over the spring and summer months. Also I would like to explain my line of reasoning. On the link Ros Appo is rated a 4*, there are 5 prospects ranked ahead of him on aggie yell. Yes I know this is how A&M ranks them but look at http://tamu.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=2142, this is t.u. site. There are still 4 players ranked higher than John Harris another 4* for t.u., that are committed to A&M, by their rankings. I just assumed that instead of Ros Appo and John Harris loosing a star that everyone ahead of him will receive a 4* rating, when it us updated.

Comment Title: Re; CenterL
I went to the site as well and cannot find any new information that would confirm players will move up the rankings list. This site also seems to be slanted from the AggieYell.com perspective. We will just have to wait on the new rankings update to confirm anything just as you have stated. My second question remains puzzling and maybe you or miller can help with this. Why would some players already have a four or five star ranking and have a spot in the National Top 250 while others are not ranked at all. I realize there will be some movement in the system but it will be minimal in overall numbers. My bottom line question is: if significant numbers of these players at any school will go from unranked to a four+ star ranking then why were they skipped over in the first ranking results.

Miller just would like to point out that the ranking are not upated, and that there are many A&M players ranked ahead of some of the 4* difference makers you keep talking about. Here is that list: LB Domonique Patterson, OL Shep Klinke, DE Nehemiah Hicks, RB Ben Malena, and QB Jameill Showers. When the ranking are updated they will probably all be 4* giving us 6 already. Also A&M are believe to be ahead on many top targets like CB Tony Hurd Jr, ATH/S James Haynes, OL Jake Matthews and LB Shaun Lewis. If they do commit to A&M (cross your fingers people and HOPE) then that gives us ten 4*. That is not even including A&M stealing some other recruits, Possibly DT Jay Guy (HOPEING A LOT), and others. Given I know that all of this happening is a long shot but this is all very possible. I agree it depends on how well we do this season. Also Love McGee and he will do great in the NFL, best of luck and Gig'em.

My personal opinions:_____The number of 4*/5* difference makers signed are:_____7 in Feb'08;_____5 in Feb'09:_____1 in the current class;_____0 in the next class!_____By contrast, tu has signed 17 difference makers in just the current class?_____What's the problem?_____In just the past 3 weeks, Sherman offers have been turnrd down by 2 DB's committing to ou and nebraska, 2 LB's committing to okie lite and lsu, a RB committing to michigam, an OG committing to 'bama and a DE committing to tech!_____Remember this terrible recruiting for four straight signing clases by Sherman when we are suffering future blow out losses, and some excuse maker says "bare cupboard"!_____miller58
