Staff and wire report
Former Texas A&M football coach Mike Sherman said in his exiting press conference that he'd do anything to help the Aggies. He put his money where his mouth is Friday when he took the offensive coordinator job for the Miami Dolphins, reducing the amount of money the university owes him.
A&M fired Sherman after four seasons and owed him $5.8 million from the initial seven-year contract he signed in 2008. The university is obligated to pay him $150,000 monthly through March 31, 2015. But the contract includes a provision that says any money Sherman earns from another employer will offset the university's compensation.
Details of Sherman's contract with the Dolphins haven't been announced, but typically NFL coordinators earn approximately $1 million per year.
Sherman went 25-25 at A&M, which replaced him with Kevin Sumlin.
Miami's new head coach Joe Philbin hired Sherman, who ironically gave Philbin his first NFL coaching job. Sherman was head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2000-05, and Philbin worked for him the final three seasons, first as an assistant offensive coach then adding tight end responsibilities the last two seasons. Philbin remained with the Packers after Sherman was fired, rising to offensive coordinator the last five seasons that included Green Bay's Super Bowl victory last season.
In addition to hiring Sherman, Philbin hired Kevin Coyle as defensive coordinator Friday.
Sherman and Philbin, who was born in Springfield, Mass., have a relationship that goes back decades. Sherman, born in Norwood, Mass., taught Philbin high school English.
