LUBBOCK -- Taylor Potts, next in line to run Texas Tech's vaunted offense, had 211 passing yards for the Red team and Steven Sheffield threw the go-ahead score for the White team in a 19-7 victory in the spring game Saturday.
Potts, the heir apparent to two-time 5,000-yard passer Graham Harrell, completed 20 of 27 passes, including a 6-yard touchdown to Tramain Swindall for a 7-0 lead for the Red team.
Sheffield capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a 4-yard scoring toss to Detron Lewis for a 13-7 lead for the White in the third quarter. After the game, coach Mike Leach said Sheffield was No. 2 behind Potts.
Cody Davis finished the scoring with a 100-yard interception return for the White team on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma State: STILLWATER, Okla. -- In a spring game lacking some of Oklahoma State's main stars, the coaching staff found another way to spice it up.
Tailback Keith Toston ran for one touchdown and threw for another with a 42-yard pass to tight end Justin Horton on a trick play.
"The coaches are notorious for putting in trick plays for the spring game," coach Mike Gundy said. "They're also notorious for stealing each other's signals. I saw some of that going on where they were stealing each other's signals. We try to have as much fun as we can."
With top receiver Dez Bryant out following knee surgery and starting running back Kendall Hunter attending his sister's wedding, only quarterback Zac Robinson was left from the team's three main offensive playmakers.
Robinson went 4-for-8 for 92 yards as his Orange team beat the White team 20-15.

Iowa State: AMES, Iowa -- After spending four hectic months rebuilding a program stunned by Gene Chizik's departure to Auburn, Paul Rhoads finally got a chance to roam the sidelines as Iowa State's head coach.
Granted it was just Saturday's spring game, which is usually forgotten by the time fall practice rolls around. But it was sweet nonetheless for Rhoads, who had never been a head coach before accepting the Iowa State job last December.
As for Iowa State's new spread offense, it was an up-and-down performance. Cyclones quarterbacks Austen Arnaud and Jerome Tiller each shook off shaky starts with much stronger efforts in the second half.
Arnaud, the incumbent starter, threw a pair of first-half interceptions, including one that linebacker Jesse Smith brought back 39 yards for a touchdown. Tiller, the backup, also tossed a first-half pick and the Cyclone receivers dropped a number of passes, including a sure touchdown throw by Tiller that was mishandled by Wallace Franklin.
Arnaud finished 22-of-35 for 250 yards and a late touchdown. Tiller, playing against the second-team defense, was 14-of-24 for 210 yards, with one interception and two touchdowns.

Nebraska: LINCOLN, Neb. -- Bo Pelini won't name his starting quarterback until the fall, but there was little doubt after Saturday's Red-White scrimmage that Zac Lee will be the guy.
"He's clearly ahead," Pelini said.
The competition for the backup job, however, could be very interesting.
Latravis Washington turned in a strong performance before 77,670 at Memorial Stadium, considering he hadn't played quarterback since he was a high school senior three years ago and had been a linebacker until two days before spring practice started.
Lee played six series and completed 15 of 18 passes for 214 yards, throwing TD passes of 21 yards to Marcus Mendoza, 24 yards to Ben Cotton and 40 yards to Wes Cammack before taking off the rest of the afternoon after the Red squad's first possession of the second half.
The Reds won 31-17. The coaches divvied up the players with the hope of making the teams even. There was nothing fancy about the play-calling, and the defense was basic. The quarterbacks wore green jerseys, signifying that they were off-limits for contact.
Washington hit on 13 of 21 for 190 yards, throwing TD passes of 4 yards to Chris Brooks and 71 yards to Kyler Reed.
True freshman Cody Green, who graduated from Dayton (Texas) High in December and enrolled at Nebraska in January, got significant playing time. He split series with Washington in the first half and took over the Red squad after Lee left. Green was a combined 8 for 15 for 81 yards.
