Aggie riders beat No. 7 Baylor: WACO -- The third-ranked Texas A&M equestrian team beat No. 7 Baylor 9-8 at the Willis Family Equestrian Center on Saturday.
The Bears (6-5) held a four-point lead halfway through the competition, but the Aggie horsemanship squad posted its second shutout of the season to give A&M (7-4) the lead. The team won all five rides to beat Baylor by 25 points. Caroline Gunn (9-1) picked up her third MVP honor of the year and 19th of her career following a 76.5-73 victory over Chelsey Retmier. Katie Lisabeth, Kelsey Adams, Carey Nowacek and Randi Standley completed the sweep.
The Aggie reiners closed out the overall team victory with a pair of wins. Maggie Gratny (8-1-1) tied her own school record with her fourth consecutive MVP award after a 69.5-0 victory over Valtie Riddle. Abigail Grabein also won.
Maggie Earle picked up a point for A&M in fences by beating Heather Healy 75-72, while A&M's Brittney Dodson posted a 73-65 win over Mary Smitson on the flat.
The Aggies open a three-show homestand on Friday against Kansas State at the Brazos County Expo Complex.
SOFTBALL
Aggies split pair of games at Classic: TEMPE, Ariz. -- Texas A&M's Rhi Kliesing struck out a career-high 14 batters to lead the Aggie softball team to a 6-4 victory over Nevada, but Arizona State ended the Aggies' three-game winning streak with a 10-4 victory over A&M on Saturday at the Kajikawa Classic.
Kliesing struck out the side in the fourth and seventh innings and retired 14 straight in the middle of the game against Nevada (1-2).
Down 3-0 early, the Aggies (3-0) scored six runs in the third inning. Meagan May hit her first career home run, a three-run blast over left field, while Kliesing also scored in the rally, and Macie Morrow added a two-run single.
Against Arizona State (4-1), A&M took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Kliesing's three-run homer, but the Sun Devils answered with five runs in the second and two in the third to take control of the game.
A&M will face Cal State Northridge at 11 a.m. Sunday on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic.
