EQUESTRIAN

Aggie riders open season with 15-5 victory: The Texas A&M equestrian team opened its new facility and the 2008-09 season with a 15-5 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs at the Brazos County Expo Center on Friday.

The Aggies earned team victories in all four disciplines and swept all four most valuable rider honors to run their current home win streak to 11, which spans a three-year period.

A&M's western riders won 8-2, while the hunter seat team won 7-3. A&M's equitation on the flat, horsemanship and reining groups all won 4-1 decisions while the equitation over fences group squeaked out a 3-2 victory.

A&M's Amanda Ryan earned the MVP award in reining. Christina Matz won it on the flat. Brooke Coleman won it in fences, and Carolina Gunn, the reigning national champion in her discipline, won it in horsemanship.

The Aggies will face Kansas State at 9 a.m. Friday in Manhattan, Kan.

TENNIS

Five Aggies get to round of 16 at Baylor Invitational: WACO -- Five Texas A&M men's tennis players advanced to the round of 16 in both flights of singles at the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate Invitational on Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center.

A&M's Conor Pollock, seeded fifth, beat Joel Kincaid of Portland 6-1, 6-3 and Dennis Polyakov of Rice 6-1, 6-4 for a spot in the round of 16. Pollock, ranked 17th nationally, will face No. 86 Jordan Rux of Baylor on Saturday.

A&M's Wil Spencer and Austin Krajicek also reached the round of 16. Spencer, ranked No. 102, will take on Phil Stephens of Tulsa, while No. 97 Krajicek will face second-seeded and second-ranked Denes Lukacs of Baylor.

A&M's Colin Hoover and Marcus Lunt also advanced to the round of 16 in the B singles draw.

In doubles competition, the No. 45-ranked tandem of Chris Chirico and Wil Spencer moved past the first round, but lost in the round of 32.

Top-seeded and fourth-ranked Conor Pollock and Austin Krajicek fell in the round of 16 after a first-round bye. The Aggies continue play through Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

Aggies to Face Colorado in Boulder: Texas A&M will face the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) Saturday at the Coors Events Center.

Both teams are struggling, with each losing four of its last five matches after having won at least five straight prior to the slide.

The Aggies (6-7, 1-2 Big 12) fell to No. 17 Kansas State 3-0 on Wednesday at G. Rollie White Coliseum. It was A&M's first home loss of the season after starting out 5-0.

Colorado (7-4, 1-1) had a bye on Wednesday. The Buffaloes fell to Kansas State 3-0 in Manhattan, Kan., last Saturday.

TRACK & FIELD

A&M hires Alleyne Francique as assistant: Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry announced the hiring of Alleyne Francique to the Aggie track and field coaching staff.

Francique has served as a volunteer assistant coach with the program for the past four years.A 2003 graduate of LSU, Francique competed for Henry while a member of the LSU track and field team.
