I thought it was interesting after Thursday’s A&M football practice when head coach Mike Sherman mentioned that the season opener against New Mexico on Sept. 5 could be televised nationally.
He said it while referencing the need for the players to keep improving, because it won’t be too long until the stakes will be much higher. Still, that “possibly in a national televised game” stood out since that was the first I'd heard it.
It didn’t take long for the rumor mills to jump on his comments, even suggesting the game could be moved to Sunday.
Interesting.
ESPN already has picked up Ole Miss and Memphis for an afternoon kick on Sunday, Sept. 6. Ole Miss had a great season (9-4), knocking off Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. ESPN2 will show Grambling and South Carolina State on Sept. 6 with time to be determined.
The NFL season doesn’t open until the following week, but ESPN has Sunday Night Baseball with the Padres-Dodgers scheduled on Sept 6.
Maybe FSN will pick up A&M-New Mexico. That would make sense. It would be a national telecast, but not shown in all parts of the country. A&M-New Mexico might be a tough sell. Both teams were 4-8 last year, including 2-6 in league play.
ESPN already has a doubleheader for Monday, Sept. 7 — Cincinnati at Rutgers and Miami at Florida State.
TV games for Saturday, Sept. 5 are Illinois vs. Missouri (ESPN or ESPN2), Nevada at Notre Dame (NBC), Northern Illinois at Wisconsin (BTN), BYU vs. Oklahoma (ESPN or ABC), Alabama vs. Virginia Tech (ESPN or ABC) and Buffalo at UTEP (CBSC).

As far as offense goes, whether uou are a RB, QB, WR, or Lineman, the spread keeps you involved, is fun to play, and is a VERY valuable recruiting tool. Offensive talent is usually attracted to that scheme over others. Another recruiting hurdle we must overcome.

Comment Title: Miller & Sister.. exactly.. we don't know
Miller makes a compelling argument that winning is directly proportional to the number of 4/5* players signed. I don't think anyone disagrees with this assessment. We ALL want 4/5* star talent, especially because some of those guys are going to wash out. I even believe Sherman wants to recruit those boys as evidenced by the number of players turning down A&M (along with other schools) to sign with OU, LSU and UT. The problem is we NEED to win, period. We are a big school, lots of fans, lots of money.. we need to field a winner! Fran was starting to win, but he shot himself in the foot with the whole newsletter fiasco and that cost us. Sherman should be given the chance to put in place HIS team. Will he succeed? Nobody knows yet. Does it look dismal.. I agree, he needs better talent, BUT I am not ready to dismiss what he is doing. I hope he pull off some upsets this year and why not start that against the Lobos.. I'll be there, should be fun! BTHO-NM!!

Lot's to that statement miller. Because you don't know how well they work together til AFTER you get them on campus it would seem to make sense to get 4 and 5 star players to form this group rather than 2 and 3 star players.

My personal opinions:_____You indicated that Sherman is trying to put together a team that works well together?_____I guess I have two Questions?____Why not put together a team of top 4*/5* athletes that work well together?_____And my second question is with my sources indicate that in Greenbay, Sherman was fired for two major reasons, and one was his inability to evaluate player personel?_____They expanded this discussion to say that Greenbay had lost games each year due to Sherman's inability to evaluate player personel and his inability to instill team discipline?_____How is Sherman suddenly going to become a player evaluation genius to do this at A&M?_____miller58

Comment Title: RE: Gentlemen = interesting discussion
My personal opinions:_____I have heard mnc winning coaches agree that up to 90% of their games were won at the time they signed high school recruits!_____They went on to say that the other 10% or so of their games were won by coaching._____I don't think much of Mac Browns coaching, but he has won 10 games almost every year with his recruiting?_____And you'll find that every mnc winner forthe past decade had signed from 66 up to 80 4*/5* recruits in the prior 5 years!_____Also every winner of our own south division had signed from 62 up to 80 recruits in the prior 5 years!_____I'd just like A&M to try 66 to 80 difference makers and just see if it works._____WE haven't sniffed an mnc in the last 25+ years trying it otherwise____miller58

Continuing the Wooden discussion would reveal he was referring to the group he had on campus and after watching them play together that the best five of the fifteen were not necessarily the best team. you could not know this during recruiting. only after they arrived on campus was the best team determined. a good philosophy followed by a lot of coaches but only after individual talent is landed.

Comment Title: RE: Miller58-Recruiting
"Seldom do the best players make the best team. I sought the right combination of players-that mixture of individuals who worked best together and created the most productive team. I tried to put a team together that was greater than the sum of the individual players." -Coach John Wooden (10 National Championships) Sherman's goal is to have a great team. It doesn't necessarily need every 5, 4 star recruit in the country to compete. I'm just glad the games are actually played but according to Miller58 they are already over with when recruiting ends.

Until some form of moderating occurs. The Miller58 rants are tiresome. I encourage others to follow suit. See ya later, Eagle!

Ken, I did not attend the game but had several friends there. 25- 30,000 is generous. Still, NM is very plucky at home. In hindsight, a decent showing by the Ags in that game. NM beat Arizona and gave Utah, who finished # 2 in the final polls, all they could handle (13-10). Should be a decent test.

I was at the New Mexico game last year. The crowd was under 30,000. New Mexico's going to be in shock at their Kyle Field welcome. Gig 'Em Ags!
