Eagle staff report
A trio of Texas A&M baseball players earned third team All-America honors Wednesday as a pair of All-America teams were announced.
Sophomore outfielder Tyler Naquin and junior pitcher Ross Stripling were on the 16th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's 16th Annual All-American Team. Junior pitcher Michael Wacha was named to Baseball America's All-American Team.
The players helped A&M reach the College World Series for the first time since 1999.
Naquin is batting .390 with 44 runs batted in. The Big 12 player of the year who had a 27-game hitting streak also has 23 doubles. Stripling is 14-2 with a 2.29 earned run average in 117 and two-third innings. He has 107 strikeouts and has walked only 17. Wacha is 9-3 with a 2.12 ERA in 123 innings with 118 strikeouts and 28 walks. Wacha is 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA since Friday night starting pitcher John Stilson missed a start against Nebraska in May. Stilson returned to pitch against Texas, but hasn't pitched because of a torn labrum.
South Carolina, which will play A&M in the CWS at 6 p.m. Sunday in Omaha, also had a trio of players earn All-America honors.
Gamecock pitcher Michael Roth earned first-team honors from Baseball America, which placed sophomore relief pitcher Matt Price on the second team and sophomore first baseman Christian Walker on the third team.
Roth, who also was a second-team selection by NCBWA, is 13-3 with an 1.02 ERA. Price is 5-3 record with 18 saves. This is the second straight year Price has earned all-conference accolades as he was a second-team choice as a freshman in 2010. Price has struck out 67 batters in 50 innings and opponents are hitting only .205 against him. Walker leads the Gamecocks in batting average (.359), home runs (10), RBIs (60) and slugging percentage (.560).
