The Winthrop Eagles came in hitting .386 and averaging 10 runs a game.
They left Olsen Field on Friday night with nothing, except their first loss of the season.
Barret Loux pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and led Texas A&M to a 7-0 victory in the opener of a three-game series.
"I thought he was just outstanding," A&M head coach Rob Childress said. "I thought he threw his breaking ball for a strike early in the count and was efficient. He was at 57 [pitches] after three innings and I was a little bit nervous, hoping to squeeze six out of him, and he became a lot more efficient in the fourth, fifth and sixth."
Loux (2-1) ended his stint by striking out the side in the seventh, giving him 12 strikeouts with just two walks. He faced three over the minimum.
"I threw a lot of fastballs away and got the curveball in the late innings," Loux said. "I got a lot more comfortable and got ahead every time and settled down. I was focusing on pitch count, trying to get to six or seven innings with six a goal, and I got to seven fortunately."
The Aggies (7-2) got all the runs they needed in the third inning, with help from Eagles starting pitcher Matteo D'Angelo (1-1), who had three errors while the Aggies were playing small ball and running at every opportunity.
A&M's Brodie Greene and Joe Patterson singled to open the third, and Kenny Jackson singled up the middle to drive in Greene with one out. D'Angelo then threw the ball away trying to pick off Jackson at first, and Patterson scored from second while Jackson advanced to third. A&M's Scott Arthur then tried a squeeze bunt, and D'Angelo misplayed it, allowing Jackson to score and give A&M a 3-0 lead.
"That's why we do what we do," Childress said. "That's what we hope happens, and more often than not it usually does."
A&M added two runs in the sixth. Caleb Shofner was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Jackson that found the vacated hole at second. Arthur's groundout scored Shofner and Kevin Gonzalez's single to left plated Jackson, who finished the night 3 for 3 with a sacrifice. Gonzalez's RBI single also chased D'Angelo.
"All we did was execute on the offensive side," Jackson said. "When you do that, you give yourself a good chance to win. Executing hit-and-runs, bunts, you name it, we got it, and when you get a pitching performance like Barret's, it's easy on the offense."
In the eighth, Shofner singled and scored on Gonzalez' infield single. Adam Smith drove in Gonzalez with an RBI triple.
The Eagles (7-1) had three hits, and two of them were well struck. Tyler Cook doubled off of Loux with one out in the first inning, and Tyler McBride greeted Shane Minks with a double to start the eighth. Minks retired the next three batters, and Jake Feckley pitched the ninth to close out the victory.
Game 2 is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Saturday at Olsen Field.
