BASEBALL
Aggies beat Penn State 17-3: Joe Patterson went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, and Michael Wacha struck out 11 over six innings to lead Texas A&M past Penn State 17-3 on Tuesday at Olsen Field.
Patterson's home run was his second of the season. Adam Smith, Brodie Greene, Caleb Shofner and Matt Juengel each had two hits for A&M (10-2). Juengel hit his first home run of the season. Kevin Gonzalez also homered, his second of the season.
Wacha (2-0) allowed just three hits with no walks to pick up the victory.
A&M will face Penn State (4-4) at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
BASKETBALL
Turgeon named Big 12's top coach: Mark Turgeon has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year by The Dallas Morning News.
Turgeon received the same award from the Columbia Tribune in Missouri.
The third-year coach led the Aggies to a 22-8 record and a tie for second in the Big 12 at 11-5, matching the Aggies' highest finish in the league's 14-year history. The 2007 team finished alone in second.
Turgeon's 71 victories are an A&M record for a coach in a three-year span.

Sloan receives honor: Texas A&M senior guard Donald Sloan has been named to the All-District VII Team by the Basketball Writers Association of America.
Sloan has averaged 17.9 points this season, leading the No. 23 Aggies to a 22-8 record and a tie for second place in the Big 12.
District VII includes all NCAA Division I schools in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
SOFTBALL
Aggies split doubleheader against A&M-Corpus Christi: Texas A&M split a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, losing 4-3 but rallying to win 8-0 in five innings at the Aggie Softball Complex.
In Game 1, Rhiannon Kliesing (6-3) took the loss, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts over six innings. Melissa Dumezich pitched one inning of relief, striking out three with one walk. Dumezich also hit her fourth home run of the season.
In Game 2, Rebecca Arbino (8-3) allowed three hits with no walks and six strikeouts to shut out the Islanders. Meagan May went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, hitting her eighth home run of the season.
A&M-Corpus Christi is 16-7 this season.
A&M (17-6) will face Utah State at 3 p.m. Friday in the Aggie Invitational. A&M also will face Wright State at 5:15 p.m. with two more games Saturday and one game Sunday.
TENNIS
Aggies fall at home to SMU: The Texas A&M women's tennis team lost its home debut 5-2 to SMU at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Tuesday.
After splitting the first two doubles matches, SMU captured the crucial point following a come-from-behind victory at No. 2 doubles.
A&M (4-5) tied the score early into the singles matches as SMU's Katerina Vankova retired with an injury after falling behind 5-0 to Morgan Frank at No. 2 singles. SMU (13-2) won the next three singles matches to finish to clinch the team victory.

Beard, Aggie coaches earn regional awards: Regional awards announced by United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Tuesday included Texas A&M junior sprinter Jessica Beard receiving the South Central Women's Track Athlete of the Year honor. Aggie head coach Pat Henry was selected as South Central Women's Head Coach of the Year and assistant coach Vince Anderson earned the South Central Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Other awards from the South Central Region, which covers schools in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana, included Dorian Ulrey of Arkansas as the Men's Track Athlete of the Year. Field event honors went to LSU's Walter Henning and Tina Sutej of Arkansas. Men's coaching honors were awarded to Arkansas head coach Chris Bucknam and LSU assistant coach Derek Yush.

Aggie cross country named All-Academic: The Texas A&M men's and women's cross country teams were awarded the All-Academic Team honor by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the 2009 season.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Championship and also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative GPA.
The Aggie women produced a 3.31 GPA while the A&M men had a 3.04 GPA. A total of 176 women's cross country programs and 135 men's programs earned All-Academic Team status.
