Aggies add coach to staff: Mike Clement has joined the Texas A&M baseball program as its volunteer assistant, head coach Rob Childress announced Tuesday.
A native of Marshalltown, Iowa, Clement spent the previous four seasons on the staff at Texas-San Antonio, the last three as a full-time assistant. At A&M, he will work with the catchers, coach first base and assist with hitters and on-campus recruiting.
As the Roadrunners' hitting and third base coach, Clement worked with the catchers and outfielders. In his four seasons in San Antonio, UTSA won two Southland Conference regular-season titles, 16 hitters earned all-SLC honors and the offense set a total of 30 school records.
Clement also served as an assistant for one year at Kirkwood Junior College (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and spent one year at Loyola High School in Los Angeles. Clement also was an assistant coach for the Orleans Cardinals in the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summers of 2005 and '06 and he helped lead the team to the 2005 CCBL Championship.
A former college catcher, he played two seasons at Kirkwood, during which time the team posted a 91-25 record. Clement finished his college career at Morningside, where he earned his bachelor's degree in physical education/secondary education in 2002. He then played professionally for the Canton Coyotes of the Frontier League for one season.
His younger brother, Jeff, was an All-America catcher at USC from 2003-05 and is currently playing in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
TRACK & FIELD
Henry, Spearmon advance to semifinals: BERLIN -- Two more sprinters with Texas A&M ties reached the semifinals at the IAAF World Championships. Wallace Spearmon and Tabarie Henry each moved on in the 200 and 400 meters, respectively, during Tuesday's session at Olympic Stadium.
A total of six athletes from the Aggie track and field program have advanced to the semifinals in sprint events. The group includes Jessica Beard (400), Gerald Phiri (100), Tyrone Edgar (100) and Muna Lee (100).
Henry, who will enter A&M this fall as a junior, won his heat of the 400 in 45.14 seconds over Australia's Sean Wroe (45.31) and Martyn Rooney of Great Britain (45.31). Spearmon ran a 20.44 for a runner-up finish in the 200 quarterfinals.
On Wednesday, A&M volunteer assistant Aries Merritt will compete in the 110 hurdles as well as Aggie grad Simone Facey in the 200 for Jamaica and Muna Lee.
