EQUESTRIAN
A&M's Earle to compete in Collegiate Equitation Challenge: WELLINGTON, Fla. -- Texas A&M senior Maggie Earle will represent the Aggies on Friday at the Winter Equestrian Festival's third annual Collegiate Equitation Challenge.
Earle will face SMU's Julianna Fischer in the first round at 1 p.m.
The 16 competitors were chosen from collegiate equestrian programs across the country, with selections based upon individual national rankings. No more than one rider was selected from each school.
FOOTBALL
Former Aggie halfback Hallmark dies: Former All-Southwest Conference halfback James L. "Babe" Hallmark died Thursday at the age of 86.
Hallmark played for Homer Norton's "Kiddie Corps" in the 1940s and led A&M to the 1944 Orange Bowl. In the Orange Bowl, Hallmark threw two TD passes (20 and 25 yards), but LSU won 19-14.
Hallmark had offers to play professional football with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins. After injuring his knee with the Redskins, Hallmark returned to East Texas where he grew up. He coached Tyler Junior College from 1950-69.
SOCCER
Aggies set spring slate: The Texas A&M soccer team will play five spring exhibition matches, including four at Ellis Field, A&M announced Thursday.
A&M will host Rice on March 25, Sam Houston State on March 29, Baylor on April 14 and SMU on April 21.
A&M also will face North Texas in Carrollton on April 7.
TENNIS
A&M women move home opener to 1:30 p.m.: Texas A&M moved the start time of its women's tennis home opener against Rice on Feb. 24 to 1:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center, the school announced Thursday.
The match, originally scheduled for 6 p.m., was moved so it and the A&M men's match against TCU can both be played on the Stadium Courts.
One ticket will be good for admission to both matches.
TRACK & FIELD
A&M Invitational includes nine teams in Big 12 tuneup: The Aggies will host eight teams Saturday in the Texas A&M Invitational as they prepare for the upcoming Big 12 and NCAA meets. Finals are set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
The field will include Alabama, Baylor, Houston, Missouri, Rice, TCU, USC and UTEP.
A&M's men are ranked eighth and the women ninth.
