Sumlin announces part of staff
Eagle Staff Report
Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin officially announced the majority of his staff on Friday.
Sumlin, who was hired last month to replace Mike Sherman who was fired, brought in three members of his offensive staff at the University of Houston — Kliff Kingsbury who will be coordinator and coach quarterbacks, line B.J. Anderson and running backs coach Clarence McKinney who also will be recruiting coordinator. All three played high school football in Texas, and McKinney coached at several Houston-area high schools.
Sumlin tabbed Mark Snyder as his defensive coordinator. Snyder, who helped Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, coached his alma mater Marshall for five seasons (2005-09) and has been a defensive coordinator at South Florida (2010-11), Ohio State (2004) and Youngstown State (1996).
David Beaty, who has served as offensive coordinator at Kansas and Rice during his career, will coach the wide receivers. Before joining the college ranks, Beaty coached at four Dallas-area high schools and was head coach at Irving MacArthur HS and North Dallas HS.
Sumlin brought in Brian Polian from Stanford University to serve as special teams coordinator and to coach the tight ends. Recognized for his recruiting prowess by ESPN.com, Rivals.com and Tom Lemming/MaxPreps, Polian has coached in the Fiesta Bowl (twice), the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl during his career.
Sumlin retained second-year Texas A&M assistant coach Terrell Williams, who will continue to coach the Aggie defensive line. Last year’s A&M defensive front helped the Aggies rank No. 12 nationally in rushing defense (101.9) and lead the nation in quarterback sacks with 51.
“All of these coaches have great reputations as coaches and recruiters,” Sumlin said. “They come from winning programs that have played on some of college football’s biggest stages. They have played for and won national championships and are known for their ability to recognize talent and develop it at the collegiate level.”
Sumlin also announced that former Texas A&M baseball pitcher Justin Moore will serve as associate athletic director for football. Moore served in a similar capacity for Sumlin at the University of Houston. Moore was a two-time All-Big 12 pitcher and two-time team captain for the Aggies while lettering from 2001-04.
Overseeing the Aggie football strength and conditioning program will be former A&M standout Larry Jackson, who was UH’s director of sports performance and also worked with Sumlin at the University of Oklahoma. Jackson earned second-team All-Southwest Conference honors at defensive end as a senior in 1994 and worked in A&M strength and conditioning program from 1999-2004.
It was reported by the Idaho Statesman on Thursday that Boise State defensive back Marcel Yates has been hired by Sumlin, but that was not included in the release.
