DES MOINES, Iowa -- Texas A&M's Emalie Humphreys and Julian Reid scored points Thursday at Drake Stadium, but the Aggies suffered two setbacks in the hurdles in their chase to sweep both the women's and men's titles for the third straight year at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Humphreys placed fifth in the women's javelin, throwing 164 feet, 10 inches to give the Aggie women their first four points of the meet on the second day of the four-day Championships.
Humphreys threw for the fourth straight year in the national meet, but the points were the first of her career.
"This is something I've wanted for four years," said Humphreys, whose younger brother Sam placed third in the men's javelin Wednesday. "Last year I came up short and this time I busted my best throw on my first attempt."
As a freshman Humphreys placed 16th then finished 18th as a sophomore. Last year in Eugene, Ore., she placed 19th.
"I'm glad I was able to score for the team since I know it's going to be tight this year," Humphreys said. "The fact that I was able to put points on the board really, really makes me happy."
Reid took sixth in the long jump, leaping 26-0.75 in the sixth round. A&M's Melvin Echard took 15th at 25-0, and Tyron Stewart took 17th (24-7.25). All three will compete in the triple jump Saturday.
Also on Thursday, A&M's Daphne Fitzpatrick scored 3,371 points through the first day of the heptathlon to stand in fifth place.
On the track, Tran Howell advanced to the finals in the 200 meters, and Wayne Davis II advanced in the 110 hurdles for the men. For the women, Jeneba Tarmoh advanced in the 200.
But Gabby Mayo and Natasha Ruddock each fell in the women's 100 hurdles and failed to advance. Mayo ran in the first heat and crashed to the track late in the race. Ruddock, running in the final heat, went down just past the halfway point of the race.
