Aggies win 7 events, team award at Texas Relays

AUSTIN -- Texas A&M earned the outstanding team award for the third straight year at the 84th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Myers Stadium on Saturday.

A&M's Gerald Phiri led the way, breaking a 35-year-old meet record in the university men's 100 meters at 10.06 seconds. Phiri beat the record by 0.01 seconds.

The Aggies also won four relays Saturday.

The Aggie men's team of Bryan Miller, Tabarie Henry, Michael Preble and Demetrius Pinder won the 1,600 relay in 3:00.45. On the women's side, Jessica Beard, Jeneba Tarmoh, Ibukun Mayungbe and Andrea Sutherland won the 1,600 relay in 3:27.33.

In the 400 relay, Tran Howell, Phiri, Michael Bryan and Prezel Hardy Jr. won the men's race in 38.71, while Ashley Collier, Tarmoh, Dominique Duncan and Beard won the women's in 42.87.

Tarmoh also won the women's 100 for A&M in 10.94 while Julian Reid won the men's triple jump with a mark of 54 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

Rockdale's Brooks wins pair of golds: Rockdale's Daniel Brooks won the 100 and 110 hurdles at the Texas Relays on Saturday.

Brooks ran a meet record time of 14.00 seconds to win the 110 hurdles, beating second-place Brent Giddens of Hughes Springs by 0.49 seconds. The Rockdale junior followed that with by winning the 100 in 10.72.

A&M Consolidated's Taylor Williams finished third in the triple jump. Williams skipped 37-0 3/4 on her final jump.

Brenham's Byron Taylor had a triple jump of 47-0 3/4, which earned third place on the boys side.

Brianna Simpson, who lives in Bryan and is home schooled, cleared 11-1 to tie for third place in the girls pole vault. Consol's Katherine Chenault vaulted 10-7.

Cameron's 800 relay team ran 1:44.05 in the girls Division I race, trailing winner Kennedale, which ran 1:43.67. Cameron placed fourth in the 400 relay in 49.42. The team included Tonittiah Williams, Alyssa Wilkes, Brook Brashear and Maeson Mondrik.

Hearne's Re'Jana Ellison ran 13.13 for sixth place in the Division I girls 100.
