SOFTBALL


A&M wins two in first day of Aggie Classic: The No. 23 Texas A&M softball team beat Texas-Arlington 6-5 and Wichita State 7-1 at the Aggie Classic on Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex.


The Aggies (6-3) used a four-run seventh inning to rally past the Mavericks (3-4). Rhiannon Kliesing started the rally with a two-run homer, Kelsey Spittler then singled and scored on a double by Meagan May and Amber Garza singled in Andrea Tovar for the victory.


Against Wichita State (2-5), Kliesing and Cassie Tysarczyk each hit homers for A&M.


Melissa Dumezich (3-2) got the win in relief against UTA, while Lindsey Sisk (3-1), who started both games, went the distance in the win over the Shockers.


A&M will play Wichita State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and UTA at 5 p.m.


GOLF


Aggie men take second at Burns Intercollegiate: KAHUKU, Hawaii -- The eighth-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team had its best round of the week Friday en route to a second-place finish at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.


The Aggies carded a 13-under 275 to finish the tournament at 24-under-par (283-282-275-840) at Turtle Bay Resort. A&M finished six shots behind winner California.


A&M's John Hurley finished in a three-way tie for first place and tied a career best at 10-under 206 (69-70-67). Hurley, playing as an individual, lost the second playoff hole to Virginia's Ben Kohles.


No. 16 Virginia finished third at 846, followed by New Mexico (852), Nevada (854) and SMU (857).


Individually, A&M's Jordan Russell (69-72-67-208) finished 8 under, two shots back of the lead and in a tie for fourth place with teammate Conrad Shindler. Shindler (68-68-72-208) set a new career best with his three-day total.


Nacho Elvira shot a team-low 66 on Friday, finishing 17th at 3-under 213 (75-72-66). Cameron Peck (76-70-70-216) placed 28th at even par, with Case Cochran (71-76-76-223) placing 52nd.


The Aggies will compete in the Wyoming Desert Classic on Feb. 26-27 at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
